Friday, September 20,1929 FINISH SURVEY OF NON-UTILIZED WOOD IN STATE Wood Wasted Annually Would Load 33,000 Rail road Cars According to a recent survey, 33,000 railroad cars, or a train 265 miles long, could be filled with wood which now goes to waste annually in the sawmills and wood-working plants in North Carolina. In the form of lumber, this material would represent the produc tion from about 113,000 acres of stand ing timber and would build nearly 50,- 000 age small dwellings. This fact was determined in a sur rey conducted in North Carolina by a sub-committee of the National Com mittee on Wood Utilization, in cooper ation with the North Carolina Depart ment of Conservation and Development under the honorary chairmanship of the • Governor of North Carolina and hav- Reuben B. Robertson, of Canton, as ita chairman. After 10 months work the surrey has just been completed, and the result* are published in a bul letin, "Survey of Non-Utilized Wood in North Carolina." Non-utilized wood will furnish raw material for pulp mills, fiber board plants, bo* factories, and similar in dustries and may be used in the manu facture of small dimension stock, char coal, and distillation products, lath, excelsior, and other materials. The bulletin describes these methods of utilization. The report includes suggestions for the elimination of waste and for utiliz ing wood that is now wasted. An ap pendix includes charts and tables show ing the quantity, kind, and species of non-utilized material reported by the State and by each county. The name and address ot each firm that reported non-utilized wood is listed, together with the quantity, kind and species a vailable at each mill. A large map folder allows the distribution of hard wood and softwood waste by counties and gives the location of the firms which have reported non-utilized wood. The map also shows the highways, rail ways, and navigable waterways. The bulletin may be obtained at a cost of 20 cents frjm the Norfolk Dis trict Office of the Department of Com merce located at 406 E. Plume Street. In quantities the bulletin sells for sls a hundred or $l2O a thousand. AMPLE SAFETY IN WHIPPET BRAKES ' • Hew Bendix Development is Effective in Making Quick Stops • A braking system on four wheels that assures the maximum of protection and safety for quick stops has been built into both the Whippet four * and six cylindered cars, according to engineers of the Willys-Orerland Company, who considered ample braking power equal ly as vital as quick acceleration in these cars. Ia the case of the Whippet Six, a two-shoe brake which is the latest Ben dix development is used and gives a much better braking condition than even that which prevailed in the pre vious model, the engineers say. This, of course, was particularly necessary in view of the increase in weight of the car, it was pointed out. This is frequently due, of course, to neglect of the brakes through failure to have them tightened up or adjusted. Most accidents happen, it was found, at street intersections where, automobiles fre quently collide when the drivers find themselves powerless to stop their cars within short distances. The braking system in the Whippets has been tested under all kinds of con ditions and the distances measured to make certain that they could be brought to an immediate stop. Other teats were made to determine the rate of de celeration to find how rapidly the brak ing power of a throttled-down motor is effective in stopping the Whippets with | the use of the brakes from various speeds. In fact, the engineers point out that braking power is one of the most im portant elements in the riding comfort ot a car, along with sufficient springing and ease of steering. Field Work in Soil Survey Of Two Counties Finished Washington, Sept. 16.—Congress man Lindsay Warren has been advised by the Department of Agricluture that the field work in the soil surveys of Martin and Gates Counties has been completed, but the reports and maps are not yet available, there being con siderable work done on them before they are ready for the Public Printer.
