Friday, December 6, 1929 A Task for "School Facts" We are getting sick and tired of so much bragging about what fine schools we have, when more land is being sold for school taxes than has been sold in a century before And we are dragging up a genera tion less able to cope with the hardships of life and to move society upward than we have produced since the Civil War. What "School hacks'' needs to do is to tell us how to get back to earth again * Government Tobacco Grader Needed Williamston needs a Government tobacco grader for the year 1930. The farmer suffers under the present sales method, where each pile of tobacco is graded and sold in about 12 seconds. Ofteij a pile is sold much higher than.its true class, but more often it is sold for much lower than its class should bring, because the buyer is al ways trying to guess on the safe side. The Smithfield Government graded tobacco sold, for the week end November 23 pijir"'an average of $23.97, while that sold in the usual manner of auction sales, on the same.market, sold for $19.49, or $4.48 lower than the graded. For the week ending November 29, the graded tobacco averaged $23.03, while the un- SALE OF VALUABLE FARM FARM PROPERTY Unify and by virtue of the authority conferred upon us in a deed of trust executed by A. Since the farmer has to pay 5 cent* per hundred pound* for grading the net gain for the first week mentioned above was $4.43, and for the second week $3.75 per hundred. On the South Hill, Va., market, for the same two. weeks, the Government graded tobacco sold $1.91 and $3.31, respectively, above the ungraded. The Jamesville Young Tar Heel , Farmers' Club gave a demonstration •at the Kiwanis CluT) at the Wednesday meeting. Four members of this agricul tural class gave a study in soils, showing how to test them in order to find what should be done for the best results in producing various crops. Another gave a talk on the proper method of keeping books of costs of growing and handling various crops. One gave a talk on the prqper method of constructing feed and storage houses. » The fourth member of the class explained the busi ness relationship and the dependence of every in terest and every person in the country, from the President down, on the success of the farmer, whose success or failure is the business barometer and spells the success or failure of practically every interest in the land. > ' Wljen trie schools of this State put as much atten tion to agriculture and economics as they do to ball we will; have fewer failures. Income tax reduction is the greatest fraud the Gov ernment is perpetrating on the public as a relief meas ure. What 99 out of every 100 North Carolinians need is an increase in the income tax fate, because there are so few people who are paying such a tax; only one and a small fraction out of each hundred making enough to pay an income tax. It may sound good to talk about tax reduction, but the only thing that will do us any good is to reduce the right kind of taxes and not incomes. What we really need is income tax sufficient to sup port our government. If a farmer makes a good crop let him pay a good tax; if he makes a small crop, then charge him only a little tax. at the corner of R. G.
