PAGE FOUR NO LOCUSTS SO FAR REPORTED IN THIS COUNTY • Information About Cicadas Desired by State College Entomologists • So far as can be learned the dreaded periodical cicada, popularly known as jthe seventeen-year locust, has not made its appearance in Martin County, although it was expected to invade this section as well as inany other counties in the State. The cicada spends 17 years in the ground while in the grub stage, suck ing sap from the roots of trees and shrubs. Another species found only in the South requires 13 years to com plete its development. These pests re semble the commonly known July fly. When a brood of millions appear in a wooded area, the males in a singing chorus chant not unlike that of the breeding chorus of a multitude of frogs or toads in a shallow pool, and this number may be scattered over a square mile. Si* broods of the 17-year and three of the 13-year varieties have been reported in the state. Cicadas have sucking mouth parts. The adult lives about three or four weeks. Eggs are laid in in the softer barks of trees. It is this cutting of the bark of fruit trees when the females lay their eggs, along with the sucking of sap from the trees, that cause the damage. Information on the appcaranec of the cicadas in other counties is being sought by the entomologists and any one discovering the insects are urged to forward the information of their find to Dr. R. W. Leiby, chief of the bureau of entomology in the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, Raleigh. Palmyra and Oak City Women Plan Hot Lunch Women of the Palmyra and Oak City community met at the home of Miss Hattie Everett Thursday and canned for the hot lunch, which is be ing planned again this year at .the Oak City school! Thirteen pints of butter beans and 20 quarts of soup mixture, were canned during the after- noon, using two steam pressure cook ers and one hot water canner. The women of this community are to be commended for the efforts they have made for the last two years in making a hot lunch for the school children pos sible and a willingness to contribute vegetables has Been a tremendous help toward the success of the lunch the past two years. ♦ Tailless Kitten G. County Asks for Bids on Four-room School House Bids for the erection of a school building at Blackswamp .about four miles from here on the" Bear Grass road, were called for this week by the Martin County Board of Education. The building, housing the little color ed school, was burned early last fall, the pupils going to the church there for instruction during the remainder! of the term. The bids call for the erection of a four-room frame building. Bids will be opened the first of next month and one will be accepted or all will be re jected at that time, it was stated. ■ 9 Cobbler Or Early Bliss Potatoes for Fall Crop Question. —What are the best varie ties of irish potatoes for tK£ fall crop? Answer.—As a general thing, the Cobbler and Early Bliss should be used because they mature early. How ever, the McCormick or Lookout Mountain variety is very popular in Piedmont Carolina because of ita har diness and heavy yields. The quality of this variety is rather poor. 9 9 Days Difference in T^wios On Bowman Fuller's farm, near Waynesburg, Pa., a cow gave birth to twin calves, 9 days apart. '
