Friday, October 7, 1932 A Word of Caution Farmers, don't let the rise in the price of tobacco make you lose sight of the value of the live-at-home program. You can't get rich as long as you de[>end upon the other fellow" to produce your food and sell it to you, but you can go hungry by doing it. Social Justice Candidate Roosevelt made a good point in his De troit speech when he pleaded for social justice. He was in the city that has created more wealth in a short time than any other city in the world of its size- but which now has more hungry, de|x*ndent people than any other city of its size. The wealth was created by high wages paid men and high prices for* materials to produce something that was sold and drew money from all corners of the ■bhhhbbmhhhhbhmi WATTS WILLIAMSTON, N. C. Board of County Commissioners * * MARTIN COUNTY wilimb (vonr TUMPAY AMP gWM earth. When all the substance these corners had was drawn away and they could not longer buy, then De troit suffered. They had nothing to do. The same rule applies to practically every other kind of business. The world has sold goods too high. The buyers did not get value received, and now the only thing we have to remind us of our trade is the past-due note staring us in the face. We need a new order, and a better business system in individual businesses. Need More Cows Now is a good time to buy that fainily cow. Almost every farm has plenty of waste feed to keep the cow going during the whole winter, and next spring the grass will come again. The cow's natural food —an acre of grass will pay a bigger profit than cotton, corn, tobacco, or peanuts, and it is a lot eas ier because the cow does all the farming. Every family in Martin County needs milk—plenty of milk will save a lot of doctors' bills and medicines, as well &s save about one-third of the living cost of the average farmer. Good cows can be bought cheaply now, and every farmer should help to make himself and his country pros|)erous by buying and keeping a good cow. The Seat of Our Troubles There are a few questions which no man has yet answered to the full satisfaction of everybody. Most people still have different opinions about our present financial troubles. Doubtless there are more than a score of reasons. One of the greatest of them all is gambling. Mqje fraud has been committed and more people have been destroyed on the New York and Chicago stock exchanges than at any other places in the country. In fact, enough money has been lost on these markets by innocent, ignorant in vestors to break the country a half dozen times. The Insull financial collapse cost the country many millions, also the Krueger match king fraud made many men kill themselves, besides Mr. Krueger him self. And then the general speculation for the past 15 years has almost approached the gambling spirit. If the people had bought nothing unseen, or things that had not been proven by honest test, then conditions would not half so bad as they are.
