SAYS COMMON
LESPEDEZA IS
BEST FOR HAY
No Great Deal of Difference
Shown in Tests Held in
Eastern County
The common variety of lespedeza
made the best yield of hay per acre
in a demonstration conducted on the
farm of D. W. Bagley, of Moyock,
Currituck County, by Farm Agent T.
B. Elliott.
"AH of the varieties used in the
demonstration produced with in a few
hundred pounds of each other, but the
common was in the lead, says Enos
C. Blair, extension agronomist at the
State College, who had charge of the
demonstration. "We planted the les-!
pedeza in March on black land and
cut it on October 3. However, tln
hav was not weighed until October
24, by which time it was thorough!)
cured and dried. The weights show
that the common variety produced 3,-
900 pounds ofdr ied ay to the acre
with the Tennessee 76 next with 3,580
pounds. Kobe was third with 3,490 |
pounds, and Korean fourth with 3,340 j
This demonstration again proves
that the so-called improved varieties
can not always be depended updn to
outyield the common. This latter va- j
riety makes less of a show than the ;
others because of its low habit of ;
growth. However, it often compen
sates for this by the greater number |
of stalks tJn the ground, Blair says.
The stems of the common variety
are smaller than the others, and there- .
fore all of it may be consumed in the
hay. !
Mr. Blair has conducted a number
of field demonstrations with ltspe- J
deza all over eastern North Carolina ,
this past season in an effort to popu- j
larize the crop among the crop farm
ers of that section and also to deter- i
mine the most adaptable variety for
hay, seed, and pasture Some of these
tests have been very valuable and in
dications are now that a considerable J
acreage will be planted on small grain j
Qcxt spring.

That Advertising Speeds Up Success?
Truthful advertising is nourishment that the people can eas
ily digest, and will pay any business concern that uses it persist
ently.
», ' " +
Competition is keener today than it has been in years, and
this makes it necessary for business concerns to pay more atten
tion to the work that advertising does.
Truthful, persistent, advertising compels attention and al
ways creates favorable impressions. It aids sales with its con
venience, economy, and effectiveness.
Advertising is vital to the success of every business. Per
sistent advertising indicates quality and value and creates con
fidence in the minds of the buying public.
. . I ■* . >
Quality goods well advertised sell and keep on selling.
Advertising builds business and, by increasing volume, cuts
down overhead—nothing strange about that. It is being done
everywhere.
For high quality at sane prices, advertised goods are best.
