Friday, October 19, 1934 One of Thousands While Samuel Insull is l>eing tried in Federal court at Chicago, a man passes through Williamston who worked Tor htm nine years and tilivested a 11 "he had in Insull companies at high prices. Then when the crash came, the |>oor man lost his all. and is now a beggar. There are hundreds of thousands just like this man. who now has to ask alms as he passes look ing for work. Their savings have been swallowed up bv the big stock gamblers. Probably the most regrettable thing about tin- In sull case is that he hasn t more lives to punsh than he has. He is a man whose greed was so great that he destroyed the homes and hojws of many thousands. More Liquor?More Drunken Drivers - Liquor makes drunken drivers, and more liquor makes more drunken drivers: and still more liquor makes still more drunken drivers. A report made at a recent riteetint; of International I'olice Chiefs, shows that since the re|?e:il of the hi eh teerilh" Amendment drunken driving cases have or creased 479 per cent in Los Angeles. tSO^ier rent in Cincinnati. 300 pe? cent in Philadelphia, 122:per cent in New Orleans. In Rhode Island the increase has bedh 100 per certt. The State of Connecticut showed the lowest increase, with only 1 1-2 per cent. This report conclusively shows that tlie more liquor we have the more folks will get drunk; the more drunken (wople there are the more drunken drivers; and the more drunken drivers the more |>eople killed. Two things may be truthfuly said alsait alcohol One is that it is useless; the other is that it is dan gerous. If the Massess Were Not Asses Elizabeth City Independent. If the masses were capable of absorbing even the most obvious lessons, the United States munitions committer's expo* of the munitions "racket" probably peace than all the treaties, disarmament conferences and prate conferences that have been held since the World War. 1 If the masses shoulda wake to the fact that the real war-makers of the world are the munition manu facturers and certain governmental and military lead ers who work hand in glove with them, the masses might see how utterly stupid they are to offer their lives in order that this handful of trouble-makers miclit become enriched through the sale of more and more instruments of death. If the masses ever come to realize that one is more a pawn and a "sucker" than he is a hero when he takes up arms for his country, the masses are going to balk at the very suggestion of war. And if the masses decline the glory of being cannon-fodder, there must necessarily be a slump in armed hostilities throughout the world. The capital ists and military leaders can start a war, but the masses must tight it. Alas, though, the masses are asses, utterly incap able of lienefiting from lessons as plain as the no* on your face. And as soon as the munitions makers and the militarists succeed in starting another con flict, the masse-, egged on by the clergy, the press, and the politicians, will hurl themselves foolishly into the thick of the fray, risking life and limb for patriotism and capitalism. No Sympathy Here for Non-Signers Greenville Reflector. While individual non-contracting tobacco growers in another |>art of the state are organizing to fight the government tax placed ui*>n non-cooperating growers, a delegation from Eastern North Carolina is visiting Washington to not only voice its approval of the crop control plan with its penalizing tax on non-signers but to petition the government to undertake at this time a new sign-up campaign that would extend the pres ent contracts for another five years after they expire next year. The contracting growers in this tobacco belt this fall have had it proven to them that through the gov ernment crop-control plan they have come back from a position of almost financial despair to one of finan cial independence and certainly they are right in urg ing that the plan be continued for another five years after the present contracts expire with the harvesting of next year's crops. Then, too, they have little or no sympahy for that small minority of growers who wouljj not sign to redyoe their crops, hping to make the prove/bial'killing" in a financial way at the ex |K-nse of the growers whw did cut their crops. So far as getting any help front the Eastern Carolina farmers in the way of support in a movement for removal of the taxes, the non-cooperating grower would do well to get by with the tax at its present level, for we honestly believe that it does our cooperating growers good to. see that the non-signers have to pay the tax?and a higher one, if possible?for the refusal to cooperate in a movement that has done so much good for the en tire tobacco-growing section. It is our sincere hope that the new sign-up move ment for extension of the contracts will get under way at an early date and Ire carried to a successful com pletion, for it has been proved to the satisfaction of all in this section that the curtailed crop means more money for the growers, and'we cannot hope to keep the production down without government supervision and control. IT'S SMART TO GET THE MOST FOR YOUR MONEYI ? Why buy an ordi nary "grease job" when you al ways get more for your money with one of our MARFAK chassis lubrication jobs?
