Bertie Negro Sentenced
For Death of Local Man
Adjudged guilty of involuntary
manslaughter by a Bertie County
jury this week. Eliaha Rascue, Ber
tie negro, was sentenced to prisun
for a period of four years by Judge
E H Cranmer yesterday. The sen
tence was suspended upon condi
tion that the man pay the widow of
Vance Bryant $400 and the cost of
the action and show good behavior
for four years. Bond was required
in the sum of $250 Kascoe, who
proved to the court that he had
paid hospital expenses and costs of
Bryant's funeral, was directed to
pay to the Bryant woman $100 the
first of next November and a like
amount each November until the
$400 was paid.
Bryant. Williamston colored man
was fatally injured when thrown
from a truck struck by Rascoe's
car on the river fill the 18th of last
month. He died in a Windsor hos
pital several days later.
Seine Fishing Nearing
Close At Jamesville
With catches falling as low as 100.
seine fishing on the Roanoke at
Jamesville and Camp Point was re
ported today to be nearing a close.
However, operations will be con
tinued through next Monday, a five
day extension having been granted,
allowing the fisheries to operate
through next Friday if the catches
justify the activities.
The plants at Plymouth suspend-,
ed operations this week.

Achievement Tests
Seventh grade pupils were given
State achievement tests'last month.
As an outcome, several averaged
8th grade. Cleo Piland ranking high
est. Others rapked from the 7th
down to the 5th grade, but the class
as a whole made an average of 7lh
grade It might be well to note
that more children were weaker in
spelling\ than in any other subject.

Miles To Deliver Speech
Robersopville, May 6.?Many peo
ple would be glad to do a good deal

but Vernon Ward, of this place,
turned the tables and pedalled his j
bicycle 37 miles each way to talk

jut Monday afternoon and returned

Mr. Ward, who recently complet
ed a round-the-world tour, talked
on the subject, "Trapped in Kash
mir." Since his return he has ad
dressed the local Woman's club, the
Farmvilie Rotary club, and the lo
L-al high and grammar schools. His
talks bear out the idea that truth is
stranger than fiction.
