Babies From Syphilis "Save North Carolina's babies from syphilis!" is the call sounded by Mrs. J. Henry Highsmith, assist ant director of health education for the State Board of Health. "If New York, for example, ex poete to save 18,000 babies aiuiual ly, could not North Carolina, through the enactment of legislation simi lar to that already passed by the Empire State, hope for proportion ate results?" she asks. Mrs. Highsmith strikes at the root of the matter in her baby-sav ing plea, when she declares: "As a result of breaking the 'age old conspiracy of silence' surround ing syphilis. States, counties and towns are now able to get legisla tive action for the prevention and control of syphilis which a few years ago would have been impos sible. In view of the fact that public opinion is aroused concerning this terrihle old disease, and science is ready with specific remedies snd means for its prevention, now is the time for every State and commun ity to go after its venereal disease problem and bring it under control. Never before have conditions been so favorable. Never before have the public health'agencies interested in stamping out this killing disease had the support of the press, the radio and an informed people. Surely this is the time to pass legislation and adopt measures for saving diseased, defective babies, invalid wives and mother and decrepit insane men and women." N. C. 1939 Wheat Quota Been Set t 363,117 Acres ? North Carolina's 1939 acreage al lotment for wheat has been set at 393,117 acres. During 1938, farmers of this State seeded 524,000 acres. Chevrolet's Sales Reach New High Detroit ? Chevrolet'* new car and truck tales reached 51,047 units in July, exceeding the June total by 5,413 units or 111.9 per cent of June sales, and setting an unusual sales record, by reversing the normal market trend. The announcement was made here by W. E. Holler, general sales man ager, who also reported the greatest used car stock reduction ever achieved by Chevrolet dealers in a single month. Records show that in only two previous years have Chevrolet's July new car and truck sales pass ed the June mark. The shattering of this long-standing precedent Mr. Holler credited mainly to two things first, the countrywide "Beat Your June Sales" campaign staged by Chevrolet in July, and second, an apparent improvement in general business conditions. The campaign was conceived in June as a means of offsetting the slack period which has followed that month in every year except 1929 and 1937. The company's entire field force was organized in advance, en listed in a sales contest, and provid ed with promotional niutuial?to fu cilitate its selling job. A country wide advertising campaign was placed in newspapers throughout the country to back up the sales ef-i fort. The first 10 days' sales report showed 13,044 units moved at retail in that period. The second 10 days were even better, 16,814 units being sold. The third 10 days, with 21,190 j carried the drive over the top. Gratified as he was at the new ear showing. Mr. Hollen made no secret of hi* elation at the denier*' used car sales performance during the 30-day period. The used car sales in July reach ed a grand total uf 13US8 units. The used car stock reduction amounted to 28,183 units. The remarkable thing about such a reduction, he pointed out, was that it was accomplished in the face of increased new car sales. Since it involves trade-ins of used cars, new business tends to keep used car stocks high. That it did not have that effect during July is believed directly traceable to the efficiency of the national used car organization which Mr. Holler cre ated two years ago. ? ? ? Cash Income From Farm Products Shows Decrease e Cash income from the sale of farm products in the first six months of 1S38 is now estimated at $3,084,000, 000. or 12. per cent lass than the $3,499,000,000 reported for the first half of 1937, says a report of the U. S. Bureau of Agricultural Econom ics sent Julian R. Mann, extension statistician at State College. Poultry And Egg Prices Are Expected To Decline The U. S.
