Tuesday, March 28. 1939 A Cure For Dissention And Hatred Since the common musses have been picked up by the present national administration those who have gulped at the pork barrel and fed at the government trough for years and years have tried to create opposition to federal policies in general and the relief system in pai ticular by stirring up class hatred The money barons prior to 1933 never gave class hatred a thought, but there has been a great deal of talk about the classes since that time Prior to 1933, the upper crust of society ad vised the common people .to wait, that prosper ity was just around the corner. They never ol fered even the slightest suggestion that would prove of value 111 eliminating class hatred, a class hatred that was about to assert itself in the latter part of 1932 and early 1933. Now that the talk about classes has been brought into the open, it is time for everyone to support a cure for the evil. One must recognize a fellow-mail as a human being, not as a beast to be subjected to starva tio? wages and unfair treatment. Before class hatred is eliminated, tin various public agencies must discard favoritism, and place their transactions on a solid foundation. In the courts, the lowest as well as the highest should be fed out of the same spoon if class har mony is to prevail. One's property should be taxed not on the standing of the owner in the community but on the basis of real value of property It isn't the lug lei low wlm controls numerous votes that is to share all the favors at the hands of the politicians; the little fellow who casts his vote conscientiously and hi ac cordance with the prevailing laws is entitled to some consideration, too. Class hatred will continue to exist just as long as the individual tries to suppress the weak by doubtful means. No man can complain if another works hard to advance in the world by his own efforts, but there is every right to complain when a person attains fame or for tune at the expense of his fellowman. Too many have attaint d fame ami lui tulle by?sup pressing the weak and not by the application of tTjental and physical ability free of disflon esty and questionable practices To advance the cure for dissention and ha tred existing between classes, the individual must look with compassion upon the other in dividual and advance and maintain that neigh borly and understanding feeling as his business grows and his life develops. Where the Responsibility Belongs The Statesville l andmark. Taking note of the speed with which the rev enue bill has moved through the lower house ol the Genera! Assembly, the Greensboro Dally News is impressed with the control which the Hoey administration actually has over the cur rent legislature. Such highly controversial matters as the sales tax. slot machine revenues, highway di version, etc., have all been easily hurdled. And the hurdling has been made easier either by a nod from the Govornor'u mansion or by the ne? cessity for revenues that the administration has frankly stated it must have to carry out its program Arid this sales tax-, highway fund di version and other tax revenue sources, are boldly proclaimed as "permanent". The administration, then, must accept the re sponsibility for its program, some of which will m quire a lot of sweet-talking to-make it paf atable to an increasing number of malcontents. However, the administration is long on this sweet-talk business, and link that to its present political power and you have something that will be hard to break through. The Greensboro paper places the responsibil itv thusly: "Tht?administration is running the legisla tive works If a cause is approved or lost, cer tainly on the basis of the record to date with nothing in sight to alter that alignment, its fate may be charged directly to the degree of administration support which was accorded or denied it. There is riot going to be much oppor tunity for passing of the buck by the reigning powers that be, come the next campaign and any questionable attitude on the part of the ? lectorate." . This has not been a controversial session The alignment has not been so definitely mark ed But there has been enough evidence of dis sension to indicate that if there had been out standing leadership, the administration would not have won each time in a trot. Close observers will not be surprised if in 1114(1 the present administration has to get on its toes to defend itself. A vote of the people would reverse the highway diversion program without a doubt, else why was there such de termined effort to prevent a vote on an amend ment to that end? Likewise the voters would mandate their legislators to undo other things that are a part of the administration program. Failure to bring about real election reform, making the sales tax a permanent load on those least able to pay, diverting highway dol lars, opening the door to the slot machine bar ons all of these are issues that will appeal to a great number of voters, and if somebody does - not go to town with them in 1940, we'll miss our guess. Defacing Miller, tin* World's No. 1 mad man, is defac ing the map faces of Europe so rapidly these days that nations are wiped out before many of us can learn to spell their names. And no mention is even made of the task of trying to visualize boundary locations. However, in this latter connection it is quite evident that Eu ln|ie. ele long. a. ill U divided into one part. We could get along a whole lot better if most ol these folks who put fire in their speeches wuuld reverse .the procedure - Greensboro News.
