Removed To Hospital Little Jimmie Gurkin, who was cri tically burned on hia leg at the home of his parents in Griffins Township the early part of this month, was removed to a Washington hospital Sunday. United States Navy, has instructions for recruiting duty at the Navy Recruiting Training School. Norfolk, Va. He has l>een ordered by the Bureau of Navigation to the U S. Navy Recruiting Station, Cincin nati. Ohio, for a tour of recruiting duty. in the United States Navy July 27, 1920, at El Dorado, Ar kansas and received his -recruit train ing at the Naval Training Station, Norfolk, Va. From there he was sent to his first ship, the cruiser U. S S Rochester. Since that time he has served on the cruiser U. S. S. Rich mond and battleship U. S. S. West Virginia. Mr. Herrington has advanced in the Navy to the second highest pay grade an enlisted man can attain, that of a first class petty officer. Through requirement and qualifica tions he will be able to advance to the highest pay grade, a chief pet ty officer this year. And with six j more years service will be able to | retire with a substantial income for the rest of his life. He traveled extensively to many ports of the world. All seaports on the east, west and gulf coasts of North America He visited the fol lowing foreign cities of interest ? Havana, Cuba; San Juan, Puerto Ri co; Vera Cruz, Mexico; Kingston. Ja maica; Panama City and Colon. Pa nama; Callao, Peru; Managua, Nica ragua; and Honolulu and Hi'lo, of the Hiwaiian Islands. Also he has cross ed the equator four times. AH this traveling would not have been pos sible if he had not enlisted in the United States Navy for a career. Since enlisting in the Navy, Mr. Herrington has taken an active part in Navy athletics, while attached to the U. S. S. Rochester was a member of the basketball team. On board the U. S. S. Richmond was a member of the , hghU - eaum. dinghy, -.rawing, champions in 1928, and played guard and was captain of the basketball team which won the light cruiser championship in 1928-29. Then on board the U. S. S. West Virginia he was a member of the football team from 1930 to 1936, which was All Navy Champions in 1132. Also a member of the last cutter grew to Win all navy rowing honors ?" 1Q*t He was backfield coach of the West Virginia football team in 1938, and last year he coached the winners of the All Navy ISO pound whale boat rowing champions of the Navy in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Mr Herrington is the husband of the former Miss "Vivian Elizabeth Mobley, the daughter of Mr Sidney A Mobley, prominent Williamston citizen. Mr. and Mrs. Herrington expect Ul spend the nntrt two or more year? in Cincinnati, Ohio. Upon complet ing his naval service, they expect to make Williamston their home.
