Martins Victorious in Semi - Pro Basketball Tourney Williamston Defeats "Gunners'" In Thiller Fans Say Waller Had Too Much "BeaircT' For A Starring Role Itott Brwh Again l^ails Scor ing Attack W itli 1 7 Points And thus, when the curtain fell on the Annual Tournament at Wash ington last Friday night, the William stun Martins had defeated a strong Washington team and were named the champions, receiving a major ity of the awards made immediately after the contest. Shortly after the final battle be tween Washington and Williamston got underway, Boyd Owen, former Wake Forest star, banked one in close for the first score. Fenner Wal lace followed for the Martins with a two-bander on the dead run and Steve Fowler Made it 4-2, Gunners. Brock twisted and scored, tying the count and Owen tossed a foul shot to give Washington the lead again. Brock scored one of his overhead ringers, and Owen made it eight for Washington, while Diem did the same for Martins as first quarter ended in a tie. The first ten minutes seemed to fly by, as the fast action drew spectators to their feet. The crowd was evenly divided and 1, 000 spectators whooped it up. Jim Waller scored his only field goal in opening the contest again in whole course and dropped one, was fouled and counted the free threw that sent the Gunners ahead 11-8 Fowler pulled another dribble goal and made it 13-8. Then Owen broad med the count to 15-8 with two foul shots. Diem added the tenth point for the Martins and Owen followed immediately. Fowler cripped one and Brock scored making the count 19-12 in favor of Washington. At half-time Washington led 22-19, but Breezy Beaird was beginning to hit the mid die after rimming his first six. Don Brock had discarded his knee guards and with his long stockings sagging. lie settled duwn tb the business of the evening. Tne last quarter saw Washington maftn a desperate hid to regain the lead, but Beaird, Diem and Lautares ganged up on the Gunners and with four minutes to go the count favor ed the Martins at 37-30. Beaird stopped Washington short with another goal in the last minute that sewed things up for the Martins. Johnson tore through the players and scored and as the gun fired Bumgardner looped one from the corner. Breezy Beaird turned in the big game of the evening, holding Wal ler to three points, while racking up 12 for himself.
