Bat. 1832. f 72Vt% grain neutral ^iritfc 00 proa# I HINTS FOR HOMEMAKERS By Mary Brown Allgood, Home Service Director, Vir|iaii Electric And rower Company Halloween Howls are heard again and we plan: A Barn Party Bachelor Hamburgers Onion Rings Mixed Sweet Pickles Carrot Straws Brown Sugar Doughnuts Coffee Cider Bachelor Hamburgers 1 1 -2 lbs hamburger steak 1-16 tsp pepper 1 tsp salt 3 cans tomato, soup 1 lb American cheese 7 slices Bermuda onion Mix the ground beef with salt and pepper and shape into seven thick hamburg cakes. Press a slice of on ion into top of each. Cut cheese in seven slices and put one on top of each cake. Use electric casserole or covered container in oven. Grease container, put in hamburgers and cover with tomato soup, undiluted Cover and simmer slowly (300*) un til onion is cooked, about 3 hours Serve hot with toast triangles or rolls. Brown Sugar Doughnuts 1 c light brown sugar 3 tbsp melted fat 2 eggs 1 c milk 4 tsp baking powder 1-2 tsp salt 3 to 4 c flour Blend the sugar with fat and add eggs well beaten To this mixture add alternately the milk and dry in gredients, adding the baking pow der and salt to first cup of flour. Roll lightly and cut with doughnut cut ter. Fry in hot fat and drain on brown paper. Cool. Topping 3-4 c brown sugar 1, tbsp flour ? 1-3 c water Shredded coconut. Heat to the trailing point the sugar, flour and water. Cook until the mix ture forms a soft ball when a little is dropped into cold water. With a teaspoon place a narrow band of syrup on top of each doughnut. Turn upside down in a plate of coconut, al to stick. . Other Halloween recipes Jellied Orange Prune Salad Part 1 1 pkg orange gelatin 1-2 c boiling water 1 1 -2 c ginger ale 1-2 c seedless white grapes 1-2 c diced canned pineapple Patr 2 1 pkg lemon gelatin 1 c boiling water 1 c prune juice Cream cheese 1 tbsp lemon juice 1-4 tsp salt 1 c cooked, chopped prunes Lettuce Prepare Part 1 by dissolving the gelatin in the boiling water. Add ginger ale and cool. When ready to congeal add fruit. Pour in shallow pan to about 3-4 inch thickness Chill thoroughly. Spread top with thin layer of cream cheese. Prepare Part 2 in same manner. Place on top of cheese and chill. Slice and serve on lettuce. Nut Crack Cookies (Nut Crack Night was an old name for Halloween). 3 c flour ; ~ ? 3 tsp baking powder 1 c shortening 1 1-4 c brown sugar 1-2 tsp vanilla 2 eggs 1 1-2 c chopped nuts Mix and sift flour, baking powder and salt. Cream shortening, gradual ly add sugar and vanilla. Beat in eggs, one at time, and then the flour. Shape in rolls about 2 inches in di ameter and wrap in wax paper. Chill thoroughly. Slice thin and put on unbaked cookie sheet, sprinkle each with chopped nuts and bake at 400* for 8 to 10 minutes. ? Honor Recent Bride Monday afternoon Mesdames Fen ner Hardison, Nat Ellis and Isa Del la Hardison were joint hostesses at a miscellaneous shower at the home of the latter in the Farm Life com munity, in honor of Mrs. John Ash ley Hardison, a recent bride. Bingo and other games were en joyed and the honoree received a number of lovely gifts.
