Home Agent Tells of Activities in County For The Past Month There were seven meetings held with the women in the major project. Home Beautification, during the past month. The 4-H Dress Revue in Raleigh conflicted with one meeting and the third leader's school in Home Beautification came at the same time as another club meeting. These club meetings will be made up in Novem ber. John Harris, specialist in land scaping from the extension depart ment, was in the county October 2 to hold the last leader's school in this year. Two new homes were added to those conducting demonstrations in landscape architecture, making a to tal of 18 homes in the ten different townships, carrying out suggestions for improving the grounds by foun dation planting, underpinning the house, planning improved walks and drives and making general improve ments. Mattress Project: The home agent spent six days at the mattress proj ect. Colored families were given the month of October to make their mat tresses. They will also have time giv en later that all of the colored ap plicants may complete the mattress es. There were 63 mattresses made during the month. Electric lights were installed and a stove purchas ed. Total expenses for the project thus far have been $11862. This amount includes rent, installation of electric lights, heater, equipment such as mattress needles, tufting twine, pins, sewing thread, mattress tables and labor. Cooperative Bulb Order: A coop erative order for Terra Ceia tulips, iris and narcissus bulbs was sent in during the month. Eight hundred and thirty-two bulbs were secured for $36.32. Only a 10 per cent dis count was secured this year There were thirteen women who made this order together which totaled $40.36. District Program Planning: The home agent was in Raleigh two days planning project work for 1941. State Fair: The home agent car ried club women to the State Fair to see the exhibits, especially the mat tress exhibit. This was helpful in improving standards at our own mat tress center. CREOMULSION for Coughs Chest Colds. Bronchitis Free Building Plans Offered To Farmers Prof. David S. Weaver, head of the Department of Agricultural En gineering at N. C. State College, has renewed the offer of his department to supply building plans free to farmers through their county agents and he announces that 150 or more new plans are available. The new plans are illustrated in a book just published by the U. S. I Department of Agriculture, con- j taining a wide range of designs for farm buildings and equipment ? from eight-room dwellings to hog troughs and gates. The U.S.D.A. book was prepared to illustrate and list plans agreed upon by agricultural engineers of State College and ex- ! tension services of 12 Southern ?fat?. ? "With these new plans, and many others drawn during the past year especially for North Carolina con ditions by our extension architect, James H. Walsh, we are better pre pared than ever to serve Tar Heel farm pepole," Prof. Weaver declar ed. He emphasized, however, that all requests for blueprints should be made through county farm and home agents of the extension serv- j ice. "This will eliminate extended cor respondence," he said, "because we have, for instance, 15 farm dwellings in the new U.S.D.A. list and 52 farm dwellings in our North Carolina list They range from two to eight-room houses. When a farmer writes in for a set of plans for a dwelling, we sel dom have any way of knowing which of the 67 blueprints on file to send him. "By looking over the illustrated list of plans in the new U.S.D.A book, and then studying the descrip tion of the 314 plans in the North Carolina bulletin, through the market took in a total of $91.84 during the month. Vege tables. poultry and cakes were the big sellers at the market. Summary: The home agent travel ed 1545 miles during the month, held seven meetings with adults, twelve with girls and arranged for one lead er's school. There was one circular prepared with 187 copies distributed, 72 individual letters written. The agent spent 24 days in the field and 3 in the office. Twelve different homes were visited.
