Bear Grass Pupils Inspect Fort Bragg By NAOMI BROWN The Junior* and Senior* of the Bear Gras* High School, with their teacher*. met Saturday morning. | November 9th. about 6:30 to go to Fort Bragg We left at 6 45. and ar rived at Fort Bragg about 10:30 One of the military officer* at Fort Bragg took us over the camp and told us something about it. He said that at the beginning of the present national emergency there were 4.000 men enlisted at Fort Bragg At present there are 800 officers and nurse* and over 16.000 enlisted men. About the first of July there will be about 65.000. When the program that is planned is completed, there will be about 100,000 enlisted. The 13th Field Artillery Brigade, which is at Fort Bragg, is composed of two regiments of field artillery? the 13th and the 36th, an observa tion battalion, and other units. The balloon squadron and an air observation squadron are at Pope Field, the military airport of the camp. The largest organization is the 8th infantry division, which is now under tents, but is soon to occupy a completely equipped canteen area the northeastern part of the reserva tion The reservation begins at a point about ten miles northwest of Fay t tteville and extends westward for about 24 miles, to the vicinity of Southern Pines. Averaging about 8 miles in width, the reservation con tains about 1222,000 acres. There is a big building program underway now. There are 10.000 car penters at work, and they are ex pecting 10,000 more. They are com pleting. on the average, three build ings per day. The officer told us that the day before we went he saw the supply department bring in a carload of flour, a carload of black pepper, a carload of applesauce, and three carloads of mattresses. The most interesting scene we saw was at the dinner hour. The soldiers, each with his mess kit, lined up for lunch They ate from tin plates and cups. When they finished eating, each one dipped his dishes into a pot of boiling water and then dried them. This was all the washing they got. We left the camp and went back to Fayetteville, where we had lunch. We then left for home and got back to Bear Grass about six o'clock. In all. we had driven about 322 miles on the trip.
