Defense Program Aiding Recovery | The defense program has, in ef fect, put into reverse a popular "boot-1 straps" recovery slogan of a few | years ago. that "Sales Make Jobs.' Right now it's the other way around ?but nobody's kicking, least of all folks with Christmas merchandise to sell. Highlights on the job situa tion: In mid-October the total num ber of workers employed in the U. 9 was at the highest level since good old 1929. Further progress was made in November, reports the National Association of Purchasing Agents. Of course, this news must be tempered by the fact that we have an esti mated 7.000,000 more "potential" workers now than we had in 1929. As for prospects of absorbing some of those: On the basis of actual de fense-goods orders already "on the books" as of November 1. nearly 4, 000.000 additional jobs will be pro- I vided?to turn out those goods ? by | next June. Remember that's for de fense goods alone: and the payrolls these jobs bring will step up de mand for peacetime goods?clothing, food, amusements ? so that there surely will be additional re-employ ment in many of those lines, too.
