Bird - Lore THE RAVEN The very word "raver;" brings, to lome, impressions of freezing tern ] jeratures, of bleak, icy. wind-swept rliffs, of a bird which often seems j he very acme of hardiness in its oleranee of the physical forces of lature. In North Carolina the more usual. launts of the raven seem to be the i J iigher and rougher mountain sec- i ions, although it may, of course, be \ net along the adjacent valleys and A lighways. ""The bird is crow-like in appear-? ince, super crow-like in wariness, ts larger size, longer tail, and deep er, hoarser, more gutteral voice help ' o identify it. Soaring makes up a r ;reater portion of its flight. In fact, ri its natural habitat one is likely to * ?e deeply impressed by its grace and nastery of flight, by the seemingly 1 ontemptuous ease and unconcern !1 vith which it rides out the most ter ific gales which may sweep across ' ts native cliffs. In spite of the nature of the win- K er climate in its haunts, the raven! ^ ays its four or five crow-like eggs ' n late February or early March. The s lest of large sticks, deeply-cupped N nd perhaps lined with moss and '? vool, has been placed on a protected edge of some cliff or in the top of a ^ ree. After hatching, the young birds nay be subjected to freezing tern- v ?eratures throughout their six or even weeks' period of development. ^ i'he parents may range widely in earch of food, apparently usually x nimal matter, and the young may ?e fed as often as a dozen times in he course of a day. At ease in the icinity of the nest, the old birds nay be heard to use several diffei - nt intimate clinking or ' gargling" all notes?some of them decidedly ay-like. After the young have left he nest they apparently remain in he company of the parent birds hroughout the summer. In view of the past decrease in umbers, the scarcity of suitable iso ated nesting localities, and the teady encroachment of man's ac ivities upon the haunts of the rav n. one wonders how much longer t may be possible to observe this reat bird in western North Caro ina.?North Carolina Bird Club. * HARDISON HORNER Miss Mary Etta Horner, of Hen erson and Raleigh, and S Ralph lardison. of Jamesville and Raleigh, /ere married at the home of the rides' mother, Sunday evening, 'ebruary 9th, at 6:30, 111 Henderson Mrs. Hardison is the daughter of Irs.
