Nearly 600 Leave
For Defense Work
Raleigh?Hie Williams ton employ
ment office registered 599 applicants
for work who were placed m con
struction jobs at one ,of the three na
tional defense projects at Fort Bragg,
Camp Davis at Holly Ridge and
Douglas Airport, near Charlotte, in
the five months beginning with Oc
tober. 1940, and through February,
1941, Chairman Charles G. Powell,
of these State Unemployment Com
pensation Commission, reports.
Through the State clearance sys
tem, operated by the Employment
Service Division, workers were sent
from the Williamston employment
office during this five months per
iod as follows: October, 1; Novem
ber, 19; December, 39; January, 171;
and February, 369
During the five months period, the
local employment offices serving
these three areas made the record
number of 88,550 complete place
ments, of which 59,807 applicants
registered in and were placed by the
five local offices in which the three

defense projects are located, and 39,
192 registered in the other SI offices
in the State and were sent through
the State clearance system to one of
the five defense area offices in
which the placements were com
pleted.
In addition, the Winston-Salem
employment office registered and
sent through the Virginia Employ
ment Service about 1.200 workers to
the Hercules Power Company con
struction work at Radford, Va.. which
is nearer to workers in the Winston
Salem area.
A further analysis shows that 99.6
per cent of all clearance placements
made in the State were made through
the five employment offices in the
three defense construction areas in
the five months considered.
The report shows that every one
of the 56 employment offices, includ
i ing ten for Negro workers, have
supplied workers for those three de
fense projects, which also means
that probably every one of the 100
counties has sent a quota of work
ers.

In one of the greatest man-made explosion? in history, sixty-two tons of explosives are used to tear down a

Truck Plays Vital
Role In U. S. In '41
"At no time in the history of this
country has the motor truck played
the vital role for which it is destin
ed in the spring of 1941." This is the
statement of W. K. Fish, manager,
Chevrolet commercial car depart
ment; whose organization, through
the more than 8,500 Chevrolet deal
ers, has sold more than 1,000,000
truck in the past six years.
This prediction is based upon two
factors now operating in the Am
erican business scene, Mr. Fish said.
First is the normal advance in activ
ity among commercial car users with
the advent of spring. Second, he said,
is the increasing industrial and man
ufacturing output induced by na
tional defense work.
"Spring is the season when all
truck users, from the farmer to the
retail deliveryman, review their
transport equipment with an eye
toward doing a more effective job j
ni the new year. Designed to pro- !
mote efficiency and at the same time
lower costs are the (JO models Chev
rolet offers for 1941 on nine differ
ent wheel base lengths.
"This wide variety of transport
equipment includes trucks for every
business. There are commercial cars
especially adaptable to heavy haul
ing needs; there are trucks designed
specifically for coal dealers; bakers,
cleaners, department stores, loggers,
municipal services such as fire de
part men!'* street cleaning, garbage
removal, and traffic signal servicing;
line and oil distribution, bottlers and
florists. Virtually every human need
is served by a Chevrolet truck."
