Many Packages Are Delivered To Men In German Prisons Red CroH? Gels Receipts for The Delivery of 100. 000 Bundles .Washington. D. C. ? One of the bright spots in the European war is the way in which the American Red Cross has been able to ship more than 100.000 food boxes to Allied prisoners inside Germany. Not only has the American Red Cross been able to report safe deliv ery by the International Red Cross at Geneva but American donors of the food boxes are getting postcard receipts signed by the prisoners Within a broader program in which the American Red Cross pro vides food packages, clothing and comfort articles for general distri bution among Allied prisoners, spec ial food packages are sent at $2 40 each to identified prisoners on be half of lrlends and relatives in this country. Despite disrupted postal commun ications. more than 2.000 receipts have c >nit back to Washington. They are passed on to donors through lo cal chapters. From the cards of gratitude that are beginning to come in. Red Cross food packages are meaning quite a bit to the estimated 3,000.000 Allied prisoners confined behind barbed wire here and there in Germany. At Geneva, the American Red Cross maintains a reserve of food packages which are shipped from this country via Lisbon. At Lisbon a Red Cross boat, sailing under spec lal agreement between belligerents, 'carries the packages to Marseilles, i where they are routed to Geneva. The food packages weigh 11 pounds Their contents have been carefully chosen by nutrition experts familiar with customary deficien cies in prison diets. Here's what they contain: One 14-ounce can of irradiated I 'evaporated milk, one 8-ounce pack age of hardtack, an 8-ounce tin of cheese, one 8-ounce tin of instant Icocoa, one 15-ounce tin of sardines,] a 12-ounce tin of pork. 12-ounce tin j of corned beef, two 6-ounce choco ] late bars. 4 ounces of granulated sug ar, one 7-ounce tin of powdered orange juice, 16 ounces of prunes, lour ounces of coffee, 2 packages of cigarettes and 2 1-2 ounces of smok , lng tobacco While the American Red Cross for wards supplies for prisoners of war in Germany, it also serves as an in SELF-PROTECTION ""pill jungle liuu roars out Ills ferociousness as a challenge to those who would overpower hiui and lake his |M>ssessiona. Plowing under cotton and tobac co stalks is a simple, effective means of combatting hordes of insect pests that will attack these two major cash crops next year, says J. O. Row ell, extension entomologist of N. C. State College. Many tobacco stalks have already been killed but those growers who still have stalks growing in the fields should act immediately in de stroying them. Rowell said tobacco stalks devel op suckers, which furnish a food supply for large numbers of flaa beetles, horn worms, bud worms, and other destructive pests until froet. If the development of these suck ers is prevented, most of the insects will starve to death or will go Into winter hibernation so weak they can not emerge the following spring and lay eggs for the 1942 crop of pests. A good cover crop should follow the stalk plowing. Cotton farmers, now sending their lint to market, should take the same precautions, Uie State Collage spec ialist said. Every effort should be made to pick the cotton as soon as possible, and then destroy all stalks with a good stalk cutter. Then the land should be plowed, disced, and sown to a winter cover crop. This procedure will prevent the late development of boll weevils and will do more than any other one thing to insure fewer weevils in 1942. It is one of the simplest methods of weevil control. Especially is this im portant this fall, since weevils stofl1 ed one of their biggest attacks In years on the 1941 cotton crop. e Agriculture Leader s If ill Aid In 1942 Farm Plan e G. T. Scott, chairman of the State USDA Defense Board with head quarters at State Collage, says that beginning this week fteldmen and leaders of every branch of the U. S. Department of Agriculture will co operate in a farm-to-farm driva and talk personally to every farmer about what foods will be needed in 1942, working out a farm plan un der which the grower can work to his own advantage next year.
