StmnLma <1 (%??/0 Mo L. With the Army in Weetern North' Carolina During the American Revolution . . . "Proceedings of the Western Army from the 25th of September, 1780, to the reduction of Major Ferguson and the army under his "command" was the way the report began for the battle of King's Mountain between King Geoyge's troops an(i the sol diers representing the American col onies That was a most unusual bat tle, being a "complete" victory for the side fighting under a "complete" disadvantage. Major Ferguson's men had en camped atop King's Mountain. 12 miles north of Cherokee Ford; and the battle that took place was an un usual case of a smaller force repre senting the colonies attack from the lower position with such determina tion that they won a complete vic tory over the army in the more ad vantageous higher position The victory over Major Ferguson's forces on Tar Heel soil was one of the first of several disastrous steps that led Cornwallis, which he was in the vicinity of Charlotte, to contrib ute the often heard title "hornet's nest" to that city. The King's Mountain battle was the reault of Major "Ferguson's being sent into western North Carolina to collect supplies and to enlist more loyalists for Cornwallis' army. He marched with a band numbering 1125 fighting men One mistake hurt his cause seriously. The Major made the tactless error of threatening rapine and death to the Whig mountaineers If the in habitants "persisted in their disloy alty, he promised to reduce the countryside with fire and sword" Among the men who climbed the mountainside with squirrel rifles were such familiar names as John Sevier, William Campbell, Isaac Shelby, James Williams, and Charles McDowell. These men were within a quarter of a mile of the enemy be fore their approach was discovered Col Shelby's and Col. Campbell's regiments began the attack The left and right wings advanced to sur round the enemy. Such is the story of one of the vic tories thai have made battlefields in North Carolina famous. It was one of the few battles that resulted in an almost 100 per cent victory. The vie- j torious forces lost 28 killed and 62 wounded. The battle report stated concerning the enemy: 1105 killed, wounded and captured of a possible: 1125. This included brave Majur Fei guson among those killed l ance Reaches t.oal Set For I'f VJ Defense Program Vance County has already reach ed the goals set up in the farm de fense program for 1942. with 14 poi cent of the farm families still to bi seen, reports Assistant Farm Agen J T.
