Officer Returns From War Zone Fort Bragg?'Twenty-seven thous and miles by airplane, completely encircling the globe, is enough trav eling to last quite a while, according to Lt. Colonel Frederick B Porter, of Fort Bragg's Field Artillery Board, who last night addressed the officers of the 36th Field Artillery here. Colonel Porter formerly com manded the 2nd Battalion of the 36th. Assigned by the War Department as a military observer, Col Porter left San Francisco September 26. 1941, arrived in Egypt 12 days later. His return trip in January of this year, also by air. took him across Africa and the South Atlantic. His experiences while watch the desert warfare in Libya included having a trench coat he was wearing shot full of holes while he remained un scathed; having his driver shot by a German patrol; receiving injuries in a forced landing in Libya; losing his friend. Major Michael Buckley, formerly of the Field Artillery Board, by capture to Axis forces; be ing subjected to air and artillery fire and bombardment; and witness nig many a bloody desert battle. Col Porter speaks of the British soldier as a high type fighting man whose morale is excellent. His life is not an easy one He drinks brack ish water, seldom bathes in spite of October temperatures of 120 degrees in the shade, is chewed up by bit ing flies, has no movies, no maga zines, no place to go when off duty and lives on a diet of "corned beef, corned beef, and corned beef." Cairo in contrast, was likened to "gay Pa ree" by Col. Porter, although, he added, food was'prohibitive in price Canned peaches cost forty cents a can. In spite of the hardships and the tremendous amount of work involv ed in the IK reports which Col Por ter submitted to the War Depart ment, he said that he enjoyed the trip; it was an experience, he added, that he will remember all his life , Q : Interesting Bits Of Business In the V.S.
