Happenings In The Farm Life School The pre school clinic for all school children who will enter the first grade at the opening of school in the fall will meet in the Farm Life school on Friday, April 17th. No child who will be six years old af ter October 1, 1942. will be admitted. The parents are urged to have their children present on the appointed date. The last meeting of the Parent Teacher Association will be held on Tuesday evening, April 15th, at 8:30 o'clock. It is hoped that every parent in the district will be able to attend this last meeting. The students in the lower grades enjoyed egg hunts near the school on Monday afternoon. As a climax to our study of deserts in the fourth grade, a play written by the pupils and Mrs. Manning was given Friday afternoon. The play, "Adi and Hamda in the Desert," showed the life of desert people on the caravan, at school, at their work, in their tents, and then their way of dressing. Songs that were used were "The Desert" and "The Desert Prayer." The following characters took part: Hamda, daughter of the Sheik, Earlme Coltrain; Adl, son of the Sheik, Pinky Manning; Sheik, lead er of the band. George Hardison; Ni ra, wife of the Sheik, Janice Hardi son; Selim, slave. David Lillev: Am bar, teacher, James C Lilley; Fahad, camel tender, Herman Hopkins; Na zar. servant, Leon a Hardison; Stran gers. Nookv Getsinger and N R_ Peele; Trader, Frances Hardison. Other men and women on the cara -wm were. Russell Peele, Elvin LH^ ley, Shirley Corey, Daisy Griffin, Bessie Manning, Carrie Wiggins and Rachel Simpson. After the program, Leona Hardi son invited the visitors into the 4th grade room. Card tables were decor ated with green, yellow and brown crepe paper with a small palm tree in the center of each. Green paper hats, napkins and cups were made and decorated by the children. Fight games of bingo were played and the prizes were awarded to Mesdames Hoyt Lilley, Heber Peele, Perlie Lil ley. Elmer Whitehurst, Asa Hardi son and David Lilley, Russell Peele and James C. Lilley. Refreshments of punch and date bars were served by the pupils. The following visitors were pres ent: Mesdames P. With this money we are going to buy defense stamps. Happenings In The Oak City Schools After the brief Easter holiday, liehuul upun d on Ttnsday. April 1. Attendance was up to normal and the school program was running smoothly. The teachers entertained the boys of the Army and Navy who were home at a weiner roast Tuesday eve- j tung. It was held on the school grounds. The Junior-Senior prom on Fri- j day, March 27th, went off fine. A large crowd was present and every one enjoyed it The First Aid class conducted by Mrs hup ton will receive their final examination soon. Mrs. Lupton has finished her course under Dr. Wal-' ker. Everyone is so busy now it is hard to get the commodities for the lunch room. The expense of hauling com modities for the lunch room from Williamston is getting to be a prob lem. Miss Meads conducted the chapel program Tuesday. The Senior class read its prophesy, will and superla tives. The primary children enjoyed an Easter egg hunt Friday afternoon. The fine spring days are offering opportunities for the farmer. He is taking advantage of planting corn this week. While farmers are short of labor, the patrons of the school are trying to hold out and not stop the boys. They work afternoons. TTie Parent Teachers Association met Thursday night, April 9th. This was the time for election of new of ficers for another year. a Visit in Maryland Mr and Mrs. Jim Manning spent the Easter week-end visiting Mrs. Manning's parents, in Stocton, Md. ? ? To Spend Week-end Here Russell Roebuck, a member of the of the Naval Reserve and who is sta tioned in New York, will spend the week-end here with his parents. Sheriff and Mrs. C. B. Roebuck. The couple, leaving here early that morning were unattended. Mrs. Cobb is the attractive young daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Grif fin, of Williamston. She was gradu ated from the local high school and studied at the Woman's College, University of North Carolina. She was associated with the Martin Coun ty Agricultural Conservation Asso ciation for some time before resign ing to accept a position in the local office of the Virginia Electric and Power Company. The groom, son of Mrs. Erah Cobb, following his grad uation from the local school, at tended Christ School, near Ashe ville, and has been connected with the local offices of the Virginia Elec tric and Power Company for sever al years. Spending this week in western North Carolina, Mr. and Mrs. Cobb will be at home on Ray Street after this week-end. Visits Here Wednesday Elder E. V.
