Dickens, well-known Halifax County native, died at Whitakers suddenly last Monday afternoon. In feeble health for some time, he suf fered a heart attack and died a few minutes later. He was 67 years old and had been in virtual retirement lor several years. funeral services were conducted at the home Tuesday afternoon by Rev. R. L. Stephenson and interment was in the Whitakers Cemetery. He is survived by three sons, Hal Dickens, of Williamston; J. E. Dick ens, of Washington City, and J. L. Dickens, Jr., of Fort Bragg, and three daughters, Mrs. Billy Marks, of Rocky Mount, and Mrs. Mack Mob ley and Miss Alma Dickens, of Whit akers. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. W. H. Judge, of Whitakers, and two brothers, F. E. Dickens, of Norfolk, and Joseph Dickens, of Weldon. Here are some suggestions by which you can conserve on sugar: Learn to use less sugar: Cut down on the amount of sugar you use on cereals, fruits and in beverages. Don't do it all at once but gradually lessen the amount and you will find that the foods taste better than they did before. Marshmallows are very good to use in ice creams, beverages and sweet sauces. Honey will be available in quan tities and is a very satisfactroy sub stitute for baking. Purchase honey in large size containers, for economy, if storage space permits. Molasses, maple and corn syrup are good sugar substitutes and also good flavor substitutes. ? Sweetened condensed milk can be used for both sugar and milk in many dishes, with water added for the liquid. Use to sweeten and "cream" tea or coffee. Oatmeal Drop Cookies 1 2-3 cups flour 2 cups rolled oats 1-2 cup brown sugar 3-4 tsp cinnamon 3-4 tsp salt 1-2 tsp cloves 1-4 tsp nutmeg 2 1-2 tsp baking powder 1 2 cup corn syrup 3-4 cup milk 1-2 cup melted fat 3-4 cup raisins, cut in half Sift together the flour, sajt, spices and baking powder; add raisins and oatmeal. To the corn syrup add melt ed fat, milk and brown sugar. Add liquid mixture gradually to the dry ingredients. Stir well. Drop by small teaspoonfuls on greased baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes at 375* F. Makes about 5 dozen. Orange Bread 1 tbsp butter 1 cup honey 1 egg 1-8 tsp salt 1 cup milk 3 cups sifted enriched flour 3 1-2 tsp baking powder Cream shortening and sugar, add beaten egg. Sift the flour, salt and baking powder and mix with can died orange peel; add alternately with the milk. Pour in a well greas i d loaf pan and bake in modernate oven 350* F. for 1 hour. To Prepare Orange freel ? Cook in water to cover until tender. Drain, cool and cut into strips. Lemon Mai lobet 32 marshmallows 1-2 cup water 1-2 cup lemon juice PRIMROSE THE BEST BUY IN RYE! 1 -8 tsp grated lemon rind Few grain* aalt 2 egg whites 1 tbsp sugar Heat the marshmallows and 2 tbsp of the water in saucepan. Heat slow ly, folding over and over until the marshmallows are about half melt ed. Remove from heat and continue folding process until mixture is smooth and fluffy. Cool. When cold, add remaining water, the lemon juice, grated lemon rind and salt. Place in freezing tray of automatic refrigerator and freeze to a mush. Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into partially frozen fruit mixture. Complete freezing, stirring once or twice. If desired in half a cantaloupe, garnish with mint leaf. Serves six. Corn Cake 1 cup corn meal 3-4 cup flour 3 1-2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 1 cup molasses 3-4 cup milk 1 egg 1 tbsp melted butter Mix and sift dry ingredients. Add molasses to milk and then add egg, well beaten, and butter to above mixture. Bake in shallow buttered pan in hot oven 425* F for 20 min utes. Eat natural sweet?Use well rip ened fresh fruits as they contain a lot of natural sugars.
