The Martins slammed out a 10-4
win over the Braves yesterday in
the first official game of league play
as the belated City Softball League
swung into action. John Hardy, on
the hill for the winners, allowed the
Braves seven hits while his mates
touched the offerings of Ham Price
for an even dozen.
The winners scored a run in the'
first as J. Hardy singled, advanc
ed two bases on passed balls and
scored on an error. In the third the
Martins picked up three more runs
on two doubles and two singles to
take a 4-0 lead. Die Braves came
back in the fourth and fifth to count
twice in each frame and tie up the
game as Harrell, Roberson and Rop
er singled succeaiveiy for the tint
two and then M. Cobb singled, Har
rell walked, Roberson was safe on
an error, Crockett drew a pass to
foree in a run and then a single by
N. R. Manning brought in another
marker as Crockett was tagged out
off the second sack, after he had ov
errun it.
With the count knotted, the Mar
tins drew blood again in their half
of the fifth as Grimes was passed and
scored on a four-bagger by Billy
Peele. This gave the winners a two
run lead which was twice enough to
win the game, but they really insur
ed victory in the sixth as they count
ed four times on four hits and an er
Arthur Anderson, with two (or
two, and Dillon Cobb, John Hardy,
and Billy Peele each with two (or
(our, were the heavy boys with the
stick (or the Martins. The losers
were paced by Julian Harrell, with
two hits out ot three times at bat,
and Monk Cobb and Leighton Rop
er, each with one (or two. Roper had
to leave the game in the (ourth with
a pair o( "charleyhorses." For the
winners, Happy Harcom played a
bang-up game at the hot corner, han
dling several chances without a
(law.
Players are again reminded ot the
necessity ot being on the (ield in
ample time to begin the game at the
scheduled starting hour, since it is
necessary to begin at 7:00 sharp, so
as "to (inish the game be(ore dark.
In tomorrow's doubleheader, the
Martins will play the Cardinals at

WARTIME FASHION
AIDS WAR SAVINGS.?A Victory corsage, the "newest tiling in flowers"
adorns the jacket lapel of Miss Florence Dornin, lovely Powers* model of New
York. Cellophane covered War Stamps tied with red, white, and blue ribbon
form the bouquet. This new patriotic fashion trend, designed as a novelty to
promote the sale of War Savings Bonds and Stamtis, is sweeping the country.
Like real flowers, the Victory corsage should he worn only a few times.
Then the Stamps should bo pasted into a War Stamp Album to aid in tlx
purchase of a Bond.

Rosters Of l4ocal
Clubs Are Posted
Listed below are the qualified
members of each of the teams in the
City Softball League, as released yes
terday by the player committee.
There have been some changes in
the lists that were recently announc
ed, and all players are urged to
check the list to see which team they
are "officially" on.
The release of these revised lists I
does not mean that those listed are
all that will be allowed to play soft
ball this season, because the mana- |
gers and captains will gladly wel-1
come new talent. If there is anyone I
not already listed who wants to play,
all he has to do is contact one of the
'officials of the league and his name
will be assigned to one of the four
teams by the committee.

Continuous Cultivation It
Best fl'ay To Fight Nut Grot*
R. L. Lovvorn, Experiment Station
agronomist, advises thorough, con
tinuous cultivation throughout the
growing season as the best way to
fight nut grass. Experiments have
shown that the grass can be elimi
nated in two years by clean cultiva
tion. However, to be effective, this
cultivation should be done at least
once every two weeks throughout
the season. Certain weed killers call-_
ed herbicides are often used, but
they have never proved entirely sat
isfactory with nut grass.
