Cookie doughs and yeast breads may be mixed and put in the refrigerator for several days, ready on short notice for the final rising and baking. F rases Fruit Salad 1-2 c diced oranges 1-2 c diced pineapple 1-2 c diced peaches 1-2 c diced pears 1-2 c diced grapefruit 1-2 c cherries Juice of 1 lemon 1 c mayonnaise 1 c whipped cream Mix fruit, lemon juice, mayon naise and whipped cream. Freeze about 3 hours. Peppermint Stick Candy Cream 1-4 lb. or 1 c crushed peppermint stick candy 1 1-2 c top milk Few grains salt 1 1-2 c coffee cream . Dissolve candy in hot milk. Add salt, coffee cream and pour into freezing tray. Freeze until quite firm, then remove to mixing bowl and beat with electric mixer until mix is light and creamy. (Don't ov er whip.) Return to freezing tray quickly and allow to finish freezing. Note: This' can be made without cream using top milk only if desired. A dessert most acceptable to chil dren. Serve with chocolate sauce. Whole Wheat Ice Box Rolls 2 c boiling water 1-2 c shortening 1-2 c molasses 3 tsp salt 2 eggs 1 yeast cake, dissolved 2 tbsp lukewarm water 4 c whole wheat flour 1 tsp sugar Enough enriched flour to make stiff dough (about 3 1-2 to 4 c). Pour boiling water over shortening, mo lasses and salt, cool and add eggs well beaten, dissolved yeast, last the flours, knead until smooth, place in refrigerator and keep well covered, use as needed. Tomato Jelly Ring 2 c canned tomato juice 1 small bay leaf 3 or 4 whole cloves 2 slices onion Salt and pepper to taste 1 tsp lemon juice 1 pkg. lemon flavored jelly pow der 1 c finely cut celery 1 c shredded cabbage Simmer tomato juice, bay leal, atoves and anion tar IS minutoa. Strain, add salt, peeper and lemon juice. Keaoure liquid and atd hot tomato juice to make 2 cups. Pour over lemon gelatin, stir until dis solved, chill until partially set. Add celery and turn into 7-inch mold; chill until firm. Turn on to large serving plate, garnish with parsley and fill center with shredded cab bage seasoned with salt, pepper, su gar, lemon juice and mayonnaise to moisten. Sprinkle generously with paprika. Pecan Bntterballs 1-2 c shortening 2 tbsp honey 1-4 tsp milk 1 tsp vanilla 1 c flour 1 c finely chopped pecans Cream shortening, stir in honey then remaining ingredients. Blend thoroughly. Chill for 1 hour then form into balls the size of a small walnut. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake at 300 * F. for 35 to 40 minutes or until delicately brown ed. Yield?2 doz. War Appropriations Past And IVuposed T eta 1 $223 Billions N Nearly 35 Billion Dollars Are Spent For War in the Part Two Years Appropriations and proposed ap propriations bring the total war fi nancial program to approximately $223,000,000,000. the WPB announc ed July 15th. Appropriations and contract au thorizations as of July ISth amount ed to $212,000,000,000. The Military Appropriations Act of 1043 author izing expenditure of $42,090,000,000 was signed by the President on July 2nd. The Naval Construction Act provides authorization to start con struction on about $8,950,000,000 of additional naval tonnage. This was approved by the President on July 0th. but the bill did net aarq* eny specific appropriation of funds. In addition, about $2,180,000,000 for other war agencies has been re quested. Of this amount, $S14,000J>00 has been appropriated by Congress and approved by the President, and expenditure of the balance is pro vided for in pending legislation. Expenditures by the Federal Gov ernment for military purposes dur ing the first two years of war ef fort ended June 10th totaled $34, 765.000,000. This includes disburse ments by the Treasury and recon struction Finance Corporation. Of this amount, $15,660,000,000 was paid out for the Army, $10,211,000, 000 for the Navy. $4,090,000,060 for the Lend-Lease Administration and $4,806,000,900 for other war agen cies.
