( (JBERNATORIAL CAMPAIGN OPENS
» aturday at Wadesboro the guberna
to al campaign was formally opened
W3 a speeches by Hon. W. W. Kitchen,
H 1 Locke Craig and a statement by
H u Ashley Home, which was read
b« ore the assemblage, declaring his
pc ition on public matters, he being
ur ible to attend in person, and speak.
T1 * occasion was ostensibly a celebra
te i by Anson county people of George
W .ishingtou's birthday anniversary,
but was in reality a formal opening
of the campaign for governor by the
three excellent gentleman who are
running for that office.
The letter submitted by Mr. Home
was unequivocal and though compre
hensive was short and to the point,
characteristic of the business man he
is. Mr. Kitchi.i led off in the debate
with Mr. Craig and his speech was de
voted to a great extent in defending
himseli from unjust attacks on him b>
certain newspapers of the state, though
he rang clear as to his position on the
issues of the day. Mr. Craig made a
soundly Democratic speech and declared
himself on the issues. A careful peru
sal of all three of the gentlemen's ef
forts shows them to be mighty nigh
together on public questions, as be
comes good Democrats, which they all
three are, and so far as we can see now
there'll be no occasion for anybody to
lie awake 'o nights whichever one fills
the governor's office, because each and
all of them are men of conspicuous
ability, Democratic to the core and
would grace the office to which they
aspire. They are also men of long tried
party service. Each is exercising his
inalienable right as on American citizen
to run for office and entitled to consid
eration at the hands of Democrats of
the Stat°, notwithstanding what ©ver
sion* friends of the one may say of
the other, or attacks from enemies.
Every one may bear this in mind now,
before the campaign is hot, when reason
is seated.
There are plenty of signs that the
campaign is to be one of much interest,
and The Record will have to say of it
from time to time as the battle pro
gresses.
The New Bern Journal, whether
seriously or otherwise we wot not, sug
gests that temperance pledges be kept
at the polls on the .26th of May for
every one who votes for prohibition to
sign, thus giving assurance of sure
enough prohibition. This would doubt
less make some prohibitionists wriggle
a bit, but it may be a good idea.

The Clansman Bon Voyage.
On the eve of its departure for foreign
lands"The Clansman"will no doubt have
a hearty reception here next Saturday,
matinee-and night. The play is strongly
entrenched in the affections of North
Carolinians, not only because its author,
Mr. Thomas Dixon Jr., is a native
of this State, but because the drama
itself represents with peculiar fidelity
the conditions that prevailed here in
Reconstruction times.
Governor Glenn has recommended that
everybody should see "The Clansman."
We join heartily in that recommenda
tion. Let the young folks see "The
Clansman" particularly. It sheds m(re
light on the history of the South than
anything that has been said or printed
in the last fifty years. It is full of the
true spirit of Southern patriotism
After its period of usefulness in this
country, it will do much toward eradi
cating the false ideas many Englishmen
have of this country; errors that are
directly attributable to the production
of "Uncle Tom's Cabin."
A safe investment, a good rate of in

May ® Gorham The Local Ag nts, Receives Many Inquiries
Regarding Mr. Cooper and His Medicine.
Since the announcement last week
that they had secured the locai agency
for the famous Cooper Remedies,- May
& Gorham have been besieged with in
quiries regarding the celebrated Mr.
Cooper and the work he is now doing in
Chicago. In response to the expressed
desire of many persons for more news
regarding this remarkable young man
and his medicine, the following is taken
from a recent issue-of the Chicago
Journal:
Still more cases are heard from, and
the continued stream of humanity
poured into the Public Drug Co., 150
State street, yesterday in search for
the remarkable new discovery of medi
cine. The demand for these remedies
seems to grow larger each day. Thous
ands of Chicagoans who have suffered
for years with chronic stomach trouble,
catarrh and rheumatism are being
made happy every day by the use of
this peculiar remedy sold by-4ir.
Cooper.
An hour or so spent at the Cooper
headquarters would convince the m st
skeptical person that this new treat
ment is something entirely different
from anything else ever soli As usual,
Mr. Cooper was busy all day receiving
kind words and thanks from the hun
dreds who had been entirely cured by
this simple prepatation.
Mr. John Schwirtzen, living at 363
Fifth avenue, had rheumatism for
several years, sick at the stomach, "felt
tired and dull most of the time. I have
tried everything I have ever heard of
in the way of medicine and found practi
cally no relief. I was advised to try
Cooper's New Medicine. I did so, and
the result is I am relieved of rheuma
tism, my stomach does not bother me

In L. T. Cooper's Work
"I have had stomach trouble lor
years, and any one who is afflicted in
this way knows what an awful dis
tressed feeling it causes. Many a time
I have felt that I would give most any
price to be cured. It was by accident
that I heard of this man Cooper's reme
dies. I immediately made up my mind
to buy a treatment of him I have
been using it about two weeks and it i«
impossible to tell how much good it has
done me. I feci altDgether different;
I have more life and energy than I
have had fr>r years. This medicine
certainly does stimulate and strengthen
the whole system. The tired feeling
and weak cond tion of the stomach has
entirely passed away. I feel well
again."
Mr. Cooper said, in speaking of the
matter: "It usually takes from three*
to five weeks for people to feel the ef
