The Rocky Mount Record, Thursday, March 5, 1908. "The Clansman's" Return Perform ance. The return engagement of "The Clansman" at the local theatre proved its popularity in Rocky Mount, as a large crowd witnessed the matinee aqd evening performances. At the matinee, especially, a large number of people from out-of-town attended, the Nash ville and Spring Hope train being crowded with people from those sections to witness Thos. Dixon's great play All in all, the presentation was better than the first, though many will doubt less differ with this opinion, largely because, having seen it before, lack of interest affects the judgment. As to the production itself, any manner of criticism at this day would be superflu ous, as it has been tried north and south, and the public like it. But, in the opinion of The Record, the drama has not sufficient merit, aside from the sentiment attached (which will not appeal to any great extent to Europeans) to warrant the belief that it will be successful in England and Continental Europe. The cast are well suited to the play and those taking prominent parts as a rule did clever work. Jas. J. Ryan, as Silas Lynch, the negro lieutenant gov ernor, displayed talent out of the ordi nary in the last act, where the crux of the whole plays rests, and "Mr. Swee ney, as Gus, in the cave scene, was in deed realistic in his acting. Ritchie, as "The Clansman" was fairly good, but was decidedly outclassed by some others in the cast. M. J. Jordan made a good "Stoneman," and Miss Eugenie Hayden, as Elsie, was very good. Other members of the cast did clever work. Two negro girls, daughters of Theo dore James, of Franklin county, were abducted from the Christian College at Franklinton by a negro woman from New Jersey and taken to East Orange, N. J. They were located and a requi sition made on the governor of New Jersey for their return, but he refused on the ground:} that the girls were bet off then. The father of the girls is anxious their return. Mrs. E. T. Moseley died suddenly at her home in Kinston Thursday morning of a stroke of apoplexy, which she suf fered while in her back yard talking to \her husband. In a fit of depression caused by an unusually severe attack of the grip Miss Nellie Fields, 15-year-old daughter of Mr. W. S. Fields, Thursday morning placed a pistol under her jaw and shot herself to death, in her room at Kifts ton. The mother of the young lady had just left the room where her daughter was sitting by the fire, and when she heard the pistol shot hastened back to find the girl lying across the bed dying.
