They or ganized during list Chautauqua fol lowing the onthusiastle address on the Boy Scout movement of Hunt Cook, and since that time have .keen under the efficient leadership of Scoutmaster Ford. , This week they have been called T int service constantly during the Convention and many people who have formerly paid little attention to the young fellows have discover ed Just how useful they really are. Thev have met trains, carried grips, directed delegates to their homes, mailed letters, and run a'l the varl- etles of errands tint cou'd be found for them to do. In' the hurry and bustle there hasn't always been ' time for 'the direct evpresslor of ap- preclation. nut when a lireathln; epell would comp nccBsix-u'lv, some one would say t, coiiip one else "What would wr fin without these Boy Scout ?" Of a boy's education becin too ear ... . ly, arid It is possible that even Roy 'r Scouts with ,al' their valor are just boys 8fter all and could endure a .-.. little commendation without III if , tect. V WE HAVE EXCUSE We have been trying to mention for a number of days the distinc tion won by Mrs. 1. N. Loftin of thig city in the recent Teacher's Assem bly at Raleigh- The occasion was the presentation of the Shirley cup for origin-! 1 musical composition. There were fifty contestants and the cup wa-, won by Prof. Gustav Hasedorn in cloae contest with Prof. B'lnn Owen, both of Raleigh. Honorable mention was accorded to only two others in the race. Miss Janie Patterson of Concord and Mrs. I. N. Loftin of this city. The Advance has always wanted to say something about Mrs. Lot tin's work in this city in helping the boys and girls with musical am bitlon to develop their taste and their talent and to go on with ad vanced study whenever possToln. but The Advance family has to con fess to 81lcn an overwhelming ig norance about things musical that we have never attempted It. We knew, tco, that Mrs. Loftin has the habit of not letting her right hand know when her left hand does a good deed, an so again we hesitat ed. This recognition of Mrs. Lof tin's musical aHlity gives us ex cuse, however, now, for rushing in where on!y a newspaper would dare to tread, and to congratulate Mrs. Loftin's friends ind pupils that they are fortunate enoitph tr have her In their midst, whether thev hav vet discovered the fact or not WE HOPE AND WORK Immediately after editorial men V'" tlon apner -d iu Tii , j ' ard to the '! -. . f ' Vh:: " IPS B he : ,,...-.,,.:..
