Let us mail it to you daily Just phone 357 or write our Subscrip tion Department and we'll see that it gets to you regularly AT LAST The Advance is gratified tu learn that Mallet S. Ward will renew the fi.uht to ret the Fed eral government to take over the Dismal Swamp Canal. This is a matter on which The Advance has always been an irreconcilable, never having been convinced that the taking over of the Albemarle and Chesapeake canal by the gov ernment in preference to the Dismal Swamp route was not a short sighted and ill advised step. We are entirely willing, how ever, that the government should own both canals. Whether Mr. Ward gets his bill through Congress or not it will afford The Advance no little satisfaction to see an hon est and agresaive fight made to put before Congress the merits of the Dismal Swamp ('anal as a link in the inland waterway and the advantages that would accrue from making it a sea level canal. Old readers of The Advance remember that this was a matter that so interested the late W. J. Peele of Raleigh that he wrote at length advocating the Dismal Swamp Canal route when whether this canal or the Albemarle and Chesapeake should be taken over by the government was an open ques tion. We expect to republish his arugment in an early issue. When one stews in weather like this there is great com fort in the reflection that the summer is nearly over. Friend Story of the Albe marle Observer observes that the boys of the Kinston Juve nile Band played well, consid ering their age. All right Story. You're older, Let's hear you beat 'em. 1 AGONY COLUMN (Fly Mrs. Peele) WHEN I FIRST CAME HEHE lO LIVE EVEKY HODY I MET ASKED ME FIRST OFF HOW I LIKED ELIZA "ETH CITY AND OF COURSE I DIDN'T CARE ANYTHING WHATEVER ABOUT Tilii Town PRO OR CON I HAD MARRIED THE EDITOR OF THE ADVANCE AND IF HE HAD STRUCK OUT FOR KINGDOM COME I'D HAVE BEEN RIGHT AT HIS HEELS AND I WAS GLAD WHEN I HAD LIVED HERE LONG ENOUGH TO BE AN OLD TIMER BUT I SPENT MY VACATION HERE LAST WEEK AND I CERTAINLY ENJOYED IT THOROUGHLY AND I WONDER WHY ANYBODY WANTS TO GO AWAY FROM HERE IN THE SUMMER TIME WHEN TUBE'S THE PASQUOTANK BATHING Resort SO CLO.-'E BY Willi PLENTY OF WATER AND FRESH AIR AND DR. SAUBA'S I. AWN AND THE MOST Beautiful View OF RIVER AND SKY AND FAR AWAY SHORES IT SEEMS JUST LIKE GOING OFF TO LOOK FOR ACHES OF DIAMONDS YOU KNOW WHEN WE'VE GOT EM AT OUR OWN DOOR WITHOUT THE DISCOMFORTS OF TRAVEL OR THE EXPENSE OF HOTEL BILLS OR THE AGONY OF DRESSING UP I 'I HANK YOU Some ant i writing to the News and Observer agin woman suffrage opines that there's just one reason why women shouldn't vote "when they vote they neglect their homes." Now. honestly, friend from Millbrook, somewhere in N. ('., don't you reckon your better half can get up a little sooner on election day once every four year?, do the milk ing, get breakfast, wash the dishes, tidy up, ri!:l out to the polls and cast he,' ote and got back in time to cook your din ner? And she can pui the baby in the :rn cart and ta-v him right along. It really won't inconvenience you at all. So try to brace up and be a sport. We don't know just when they're coming, but hard sur faced roads for this section are on the way. The Highway Commission doesn't know just which road it will begin work on when the final link in the Elizabeth City-Weeksville road has been completed, but the brick for the next road have already been purchased. At the rate the residences are going up and being plan ned these days, Elizabeth City's housing problem seems in fair way of solving itself soon. The expediency argument is noas some of the brethren seem disposed to view it, a pro posal to sacrifice convictions for the mere sake of political advantage. It is this: Suffrage is upon us. We must accept it sooner or later. And if even tually, why not now, while we may do so graciously and while we may reap political advan tage thereby? Is it worth while to risk defeat in the na tional elections for the sake of delaying the inevitable by six months, more or less? Elizabeth City loses a live wire when A. R. Nicholson leaves-us for Creenvile, South Carolina, next week. When a call for boosters went out Nick could always be depended on to be there, whether there was a free lunch or not.
