Anthracite l'ro?|??-cts With the approach of Septem ber 1, when the contract be tween anthracite operators and miners expires, the probability of a strike in the hard coal in dustry appears to be steadily diminishing. It is likely that the troubles of the anthracite con sumer next winter will consist of paying through the nose rath er than of suffering a stoppage of his fuel supply by a strike. John Hays Hammond, chair man of the Coal Commission, af ter an interview with the Presi dent, announces that the Com mission will receive Mr. Cool idge's "unqualified support" in its efforts to prevent a tie-up. The specific powers which the Commission suggested be con ferred upon the President are, | of course, lacking. But they were lacking in 1902, when President Roosevelt faced a sim ilar problem, and that did not prevent an effective assertion ol I the Executive's will against a strike. Mr. Roosevelt named his arbitration commission after the strike had occurred, but he was; supported by public sentiment just as President Coolidge will be supported in his move to pre vent a strike. While,.the President prepare; to call representatives of the op erators and the miners to Wash ington to insist upon a settle ment, there comes from Samuel; D. Warriner, chairman of the) operators' general committee, -the statement that the employ-; ers are ready to arbitrate the question of the check-off, the on-1 ly iptportant point of disagree ment between operators and un ion. Either voluntary agree ment or arbitration seems now to be*altogether likely. Mr. Hammond's statement that the Coal Commission is con vinced that non-anthracite fuel! can fill the needs of the whole country if tiecessary is reassur-j ing, whether there is a strike or not. Some consumers may find a high anthracite price an equal ly good reason for turning to other fuels.?The Sun and the! Globe.
