A:;<l :: 111 the fell flui.-!i cii, .11!, stance, tli?- I.i111 OM Advaii-e has never winc.d nor cried aloud; and whv lit^ctih the 1)1 udgooning of f:it<', its head, though :>t limes bloody, has never yet liecn bowed. Law and (jiniiiiiiii Spiim' The Ad vance is not disposed to make a racket over tin: fact that the ban against the sale and the firing of firecrackers in Elizabeth City, by reason ol failure to include an ordinance forbidding both when the city ordinances were recently re vised and recoded, has been lift ed. This newspaper is frank to say that for its own part it pre fers a safe and sniTe Christinas; but the fireworks law of late years has been so much violated or evaded, that The Advance is willing to see put to a test the contention of certain advocates of the removal of the ban against the firing and sale of them 4n the city limits who claim that with the restrictions, against fireworks removed in terest in them would in reality be lessened. *" But the fact that it is no long er a misdemeanor to shoot a lire cracker in the city does no1 mean that the police have no supervision over reckless or' careless or wantonly dangerous and annoying practices in the handling of fireworks. Wednesday night, for in stance, during the Elks show, careless but full grown young1 men kept up a fusilade of lire works in the neighborhood of the Alkrama theater to the: point of very really disturbing! those who were attending the! show. A few hoodlums actually threw firecrackers into the foyer of the theater. This the police could easily and most certainty should have dealt with. Again, manifestly the dis charge of fireworks where little children are crowded together, as on the school grounds, is a dangerous practice, and one that the teachers should be able to handle, if necessary, so far as school grounds are concerned, without help of the police. Al ? ready one hears of a boy at school who narrowly escaped * serious injury to his eyesight one day this week by the explo I aian of a firecracker: and then , comes the tale of a giant crack er exploding ill a youngster's booksack and wrecking the sack, tit goes without argument. The PAdvance takes it. that no ma' ' ter how wide open the town may be to the shooting of flr< - works, the firing of them on the schoolground should be most ? strictly prohibited. Parents win k,realize the danger of fireworks KftB keep their little children otf ~ the streets to some extent. They Bftnot very well keep them off |the school grounds.
