WOMEN'S INTERESTS Surprise Party A lovely surprise party was given Mrs. W. S. Chesson Saturday even ing in celebration of her birthday. A large basket of gifts was presented to her, there were readings and oth er pleasant features. Refreshments were served, consisting of fruit sal ad and cake. Those present were Mrs. A. C. Bell, Mrs. J. W. Edney, Mrs. J. F. West. Mrs. C. W. Ward. Mrs. S. W. Hastings. Mrs. W. E. Mc Coy, Mrs. Chas. Gregory, Mrs. Ed Connery, Mrs. Albert Jackson, Mrs. William Bartlett, Mrs. C. E. Over man, Mrs. T. F. Bartlett. Mrs. W. M. Sawyer, Mrs. Coston Sawyer. Mrs. Sam Belanga and Mrs. J. C. Modlln. Kifthty-flfth Birthday The C. M. B. Class of Black well Memorial Sunday school gave its old est member. Mrs. Sarah Cartwright. on Broad street a happy birthday surprise party Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Cartwright was 85 years old and the birthday cake presented by the class was gayly decked with tiny Easter eggs Instead of the conven tional candles. In the center was a downy chick bearing a message of love and cheer from the class. After a program of bright Easter songs. Psalms, talks, and poems, refresh ments were served by Mrs. Robert Cartwright. One of the enjoyable features of the afternoon was the singing of birthday greetings by lit tle Jean Armstrong, great grand daughter of the honoree. Meeting Mothers' C'Inb The regular meeting of the Moth ers' Club was held Wednesday aUer noon at the Community House with 14 mothers and 18 babies present. Out of the number of babies weighed only one showed loss, this one hav ing been sick. Mrs. Frank Scatter good conducted the devotional ser vices. Dr. Zer.as Fearing was ex pected. but was unable to attend, so Mrs. Maggie Blount and Miss Inei Reid entertained with stories. At tractive Easter baskets were pre sented to every, one by F. A. Sel bert, manager of Woolworth Btore. Mrs. Scattergood also gave Easter cards. All the members expressed regret at the Illness of*thelr presi dent, Mrs. Martin Jennings, and hoped that she would soon be out again. Ix>vely Surprise Party A lovely surprise birthday party was given Thursday evening by Mrs. H. M. Ballance, Mrs. Casper l^ainb, and Mrs. W. O. Saunders for Mrs. P. S. Slilpp, at her home 303 First istreet. Mrs. Shipp, who was invited, lout to dinner, was called home to! find the home a bower of tulips and Jonquils and about 30 guests pres ent. Many beautiful gifts were showered on her and every one was Invited Into the dining room where I a large birthday cake banked by tu-| lips formed the centerpiece. Frank Swain re turned to their home on Cedar street Wednesday evening, after spending a few days with Mrs. Swain's mother, Mrs. W. W. Woodard of Norfolk. John Kramer. Tyre Sawyer. Roy Simmons, Wesley Sheep. Frank Hor ner. Mahlon Raper. William Klrch eimer of Norfolk, and Ralph Wilcox left Thursday for a four days' camp ing trip in Currituck. Mrs. Ella Hollowell Is 111 at her home on Burgess street. Mrs. L. Frank Swain, 315 Cedar street, has received news of the birth of her nephew to Mr. and Mrs. Hen ry Lehman of Norfolk Wednesday morning. Mrs. Lehman was former ly Miss Mabel Woodard of this city. Mrs. Robert Whitehurst. and Mrs. Frank Scott motored to 'Norfolk Wednesday for a day's shop ping. Mrs. J. B. Curtwright Is 111 again at her home on Pearl street. F. M.
