BROOKLYN SHOW IS DISAPPOINTING fto Matter ^ lu?re They Come I* rom Pitchers Seem to Turn Up Their Toes When They Meet Giants. By JOHN II. I'OSTKlt Copyright. 1924, far 1h? Adv. nr. New York. June 7.?But for the Intrusion of the Chicago Cubs into the first division, the 1924 race In the National League might he almost a replica of the race of 1923. The Giants have not won quite as many games as they did last year, hut they don't need them If the other cluha do no better than they liavo been do ing. Brooklyn, for instance, has lost nine games to New York and won only two since the season began. Last year on May 5, Brooklyn luid won 2.1 games and lost 19. to date they have won 22 and lost 19. The Cubs, up in second place, are about five and a halt games ahead of their last year's record, with a total of 25 games ahead of their last year's record, with a total of 25 won and 18 lost. Cincinnati's record is al most identical with last year's, that club having lost the ground It gained early in the season, when it looked as If Cincinnati was going to be the challenger of the Giants The Pittsburgh club is crawling up a trifle, but the remainder of the league Is plodding along at the same ?Ld.u.hUm. drum pace and ?here Is nothing but the remotest possibili ty that the other clubs will do any better the reBt of the season. By JOIIX FOSTEIt C*?jrrt?M. IV34. hv Th? Advi*M 'New York June 7.?Lee Fohl, manager of the Boston Americans, is conducting a triumphal tour of the West, meeting old friends who are proud to shake his hand, and leav ing behind him a trail of baseball memories of might-have-beens. He has just been presented with a diamond ring at St. Louis, the ci ty which he quit as a baseball man ager last season, not altogether of his own violltion. He also seized upon the opportunity to win for Bos ton a temporary leadership of the American League at the expense of the team he piloted last year. Thus poetic Justice is served sometimes in baseball, as well as in the classics. Nothing could have been fitter than for him to take the league leader ship?today reduced to second place New Millinery AT Mitchell's Shipment Every Week LADIES' HATS. $3.08, 95.00, 90.50 CHILDREN'S HATS, 91.08, 92.48, 92.08 'S ?*t the hand* of th eclub which last year turned him down Just as he had got the outfit going. When Fohl gets to Cleveland, they are to give him a "Fohl Day." There is another city In which ho was unfortunate. They thought in Cleveland that he guessed poorly with his pitchers, and it was the heritage of that opinion which fol lowed him to St. Louis, where he was criticized for changing pitchers in a game against New York which had , much to do with the pennant. Second guessers hare done more to hurt Kohl's careers than any oth-l er thing. has boon compelled to run a veritable obstacle race be cause of the attacks that have been ( made upon his Judgment. Yet cold i facts show that he has always brought forward the team he has been permitted to control. As the Boston Americans stand trow, they must be reckoned with, until they come an awful flop. They have not exactly fought their way to the top of the league, because they have been in the neighborhood' of the top all season. They are re taining their hold on first division because they are good and because their pitchers are doing better than anyone expected they would. Also, because they are hitting the ball hard when hits count. B ITES-STINGS I Applj w.i baking soda or hoau ' hold ammonia* follow.d br X/ICKS ?
