I have opened a furniture repair shop on Wider street, next to Armory, where I am prepaired to re air furniture of all kinds. Upholstering a specialty. Have your old furniture worked over it will pay you, Respectfully, W. 0. Davis, At a late hour Saturday night our town was thrown into a state of excitement by the ringing of a bell. Many thought it was a lire alarm but it proved to be a signal for the Military Company, for with in fifteen minutes 2( of the company had nif-t and the command of Ctpt. ltc-id, "Fours Ribt!" was heard throughout the town. Just who rang the bell is not known, but the soldiers answered promptly. -MILITARY BANQUET. FRIDAY LAST A MEMORABLE DAY IN" PLY M 0 UT H S PE EC II ES, M USIC, BANQUET AND BATTLES. Loyaltj' and Patriotism of Ply mouth People Awakened. At an early hour on Friday plum ing last the streets began to lill with people, each one eager to add one act to make the event of the day a success. The occasion was a Military Ban quet given by the people of Plym outh and surrounding community to the Hoanoke Riflemen, under the management of the patriotic ladies, with Mt'3. C. J. Norman and Mrs. W. F. Ausbon at the head, it seemed, that every lady, old and young, was interested, and not only contributed of their means, but alao gave their presence. At 11 o'clock the soldiers filled the streets, under command of Capt. lleid, and a few minutes thereafter the town hall was tilled to overflow ing with patriotic citizens, pretty women and happy children. In view before the curtain were two fluga with long streamers of red, white and blue. When the curtain rose there proved to be two little girls a'.id one little boy attached to each flag, while the stage was draped in festoons of the stars and stripes, and in the center stood three little Misses dressed in red, white and blue, and with the going up of the curtain the one in red, Miss 3ee Midgett, gave the soldiers the fol- children loinni'r in tne chorus, uncr they quit the stage amid a deafning applause. The above part of the day's exercises was under the direc tion of Miss Annie Mizell, ttie lines for the occasion being furnished by the Beacon's poetical man. Mr. W. F. Ausbon next appeared to offer an excuse for the non-appearance of Hon. S. 1. Spiuill, who was to have made the opening ad dress, but was called away. After a few remarks that speaker retired, and Mr. Edmund Alexander enter tained the s.ohliers and people with one of the best speeches of his life. Every sentence was full of thought and inspiring to the soldiers. After Mr. Alexander quit the stage and ; selection hail been ren dered by uie string band, Mr. II. S. Ward (extended "to the Military Company the invitation to the ban- miet: hs speech was short, but pointed, and full of .eloquence and encouragement. As he withdrew the curtain fell while the band played "Dixie." - As the cm-tain went up again Mr. Macon Norman walked off the stage bearing a largo flag. He was fol lowed by the three girls in red, white and blue, each holding one of the streamers.' As they marched out of the hall they were followed by the Company, over the rear of which floated the tVo smaller flags, borne one by Mr. W. N. Cooper, the other by Mr. J. RY Brooks, each being attended by the three children hold ing the streamers. The parade marched up Washington street, pas sed Third, then back to Water street and to the Armory, where a large number of people awaited to bid them welcome to a magnificent spread of good things. It was in deed a big dinner, to which all did justice. From a table forty-five feet long 17o men and women dined, besides perhaps half as many child ren. After all was filled several baskets well tilled were taken away and distributed among the poor peo ple of the town. After a rest of two hours, the Company fell in line and did some good drilling. Two sham battles were fought on Washington street, the Company being divided, one half in command of Capt. lie id and Sergeant Johnston, the other un der Lieutenants Mizell and Jackson. The battles were well fought, and the ease in which the oflicers hand led the men, gives evidence that the Roanoke Riflemen are rapidly im proving. It was one of the most successful events in the history of Plymouth.
