THE KOANOKE REACON PubuHhed Every Friday, Office opposite Post Office, up stairs in Norman Building; . Entered In the PoatOffice at Plymouth N. C, as Second cl'iss Blatter. We appeal to every reader or Th Roanoke Bbacon, to aid iiH in making it an acceptable aud profitable medium of news to our citizeuo. Lot rlj 'mouth people ,atid the public kuow wuat is goiui; on iu Plymouth, ltuport to us all itm: of new the arrival and departure of friends, social vent, deaths, sorious illness, accidents, now buildings, ntew enterprises aud improvements -of whatever character, changes in business indeed anything aud everything that would be of interest to our people. Bnbecnption price, $1.00 per year. Advertisements inserted at low raVg. Obituary notices exceeding ten lint e, five cents a line. Count the words, allowing eight to the line, and send money with MS. for all iu excess of ten lines. The editor will not be responsible for the views of correspondents. All articles for publication must be accomo.v.iied by the full name of t no writer. Correspondents are requested not to write on but one side of the paper. ' All communications mnst he went in by Thursday morning or they will not appear. Address all communications to THE KOANOKE BEA.CON, Plymouth, N. C. It is gratifying to note that those Democrats who favored co-operation, hoping thereby to win a victory for Letter government, are now working in harmony, having laid aside the views they held before the State Con vention met. We publish in this issue the plat form adopted by the Democratic Convention at Raleigh on the 2Gth ulto. It is a true blue Democratic platform, on which all men who are in favor of white supremacy, free silver and good government can stand and fight. The Democratic State Convention which met in Ealeigh last week very respectfully declined to accept the co-operation proposition made them by the Populists. It wa3 not through any disrespect to the party caused them to decline, but because they did not consider the proposition ,a fair one. The question of annexing Hawaii is again before Congress, Democrats oppose and a majority of Republicans favor annexation. 'Tis said that Tom Reed is doing some heavy kick ing against annexation, so he i? and it is well known that he has a sugar coated reason for so doing. If Hawaii should be annexed it simply means more non-interest bear ing bonds a sinch for money lords. It means that we must assume its debts and spend millions on it. Ox the Supreme Court bench there are three Republicans, one Democrat and one Populist. The Superior Court is composed of six Republicans, five Democrats and one Republican-Populist, and there are two Republicans on the Criminal Court bench. Of all kinds of Judges the Republicans have eleven, the Democrats six and the Populists two. The terms of all the Demo crats expire January 1st 1890 except Justice Clark, and the Judicial Districts have made wise nomina tions for these places, and if the plea that the State should have a non-partisan Judiciary is adhered to the nominees will be elected. Lv referring to co-operation and fusion in our last we mentioned the fact that the Populist in this county did not vote the combination ticket, but scratched the Democratic candi dates. In writing that article it was our purjiose to lay the same respon sibility on tle Democrats, for they too proved false to the agreement. It was for this reason that we said co-operation must fail, and it is bound tQ be thus where both parties hold malice. We regret to admit , it, yet it is true, that there has existed, not only a political, but a personal hatred be tween Democrats and Populists. We believe this feeling is growing less, and we hope the time is not far dis tant when our people can bury the hatchet and again be united. Some sacrifices must be made by both the parties, their interests are too neari the same for such wide differences to exist. Titer a are still some who are harping ovi the rumor that Nortn Carolina has failed to furnish her quota of volunteers for the army. North Carolina came in ahead of tweuty-two other states in making up her quota and twice the .number could have been raised if necessary. The St. Louis Globe-Democrat says: "It may become necessary to ask for outside volunteers to make up North Carolina's full quota of troops. The Governor of South Carolina ought to say something in thunder tones to the Governor of North Car olina." In reply to this the News and Ob server says: "What ought the people of North Carolina to say to the Globe-Democrat and other papers that copy the lie about our State? Under the call for 125,000 volunteer:!, North Carolina had tho full number before twenty-two other States had their quota, and this in spite of the delay of the Federal authorities in provi ding blankets, arms and uniforms. The Globe-Democrat is requested to copy." Some have said that the sum to be paid by the Board of County Commissioners for the record vaults, which is $4,000, is too much ; that the work could have been done for 82,000 or $3,500. In justice to the Board we would say that said Board had several esti mates from different parties, and that this bid was the cheapest for vaults like they wanted. The Com missioners have done the best they cduld in the matter, and while it is true a vault might have been built for half the sum, yet it would have been too small for the purposes needed, while the one to be built will suffice for all time. The building is to be erected out side the Court House and in such a way that should the Court House be burned the vaults could be used as offices for the Register and Clerk. The building will contain two rooms 15x15, with all necessary furniture, lock-ups, etc. The outside walla will be of brick and cement 20 iuciies thich with steel braces and ven filia tion, the windows will be' protected by steel shutters inside and out. From the specifications we think the price and terms are reasonable and that our people will be entirely satisfied. Two Millions a Year. When people buy, try, and buy again, it means they're satistied. The peoplo of the United States are now buying Cascarets Candy Cathartic at the rate of two million boxes a year and it will be three million be fore New Year's. The Democratic party of North Carolina, in convention assembled iu Kaleigh, N. C, on thia day, May 2Cth, 1893, do hereby approve, endorse and ratify the last Demo cratic national and State platform and pledge our earnest support to the princi ples therein expres&ed. Believing that under the present methods of Federal taxation more than three-quarters of our national revenues are paid by people own ing less thau one-quarter of tho property of the country, we protest against such inequality and injustice, and, iu order to remedy, to some extent, aud this great wrong, we favor an income tax and favor all constitutional methods to sustaiu it. "We denounce the Republican party for its defeat of tho Teller resolution declaring our national bonds payable iu silver as well as gold, and denounce it for its de termined purpose of mora thoroughly fastening the single gold standard upon our people, aud for its avowed hostility to the free and and unlimited coiuage of silver, as well as gold, at tho ratio of 16 to 1, huo fall legal tender money. We de nounce the Hepublican party for its de termination to issue bonds at this time, aud we denouuee the Republican war tax bill, which lately passed the House of Repre sentatives, as unjust, unequal in its bur dens, and unuesessarily vexatious, aud we demand that the silver seigniorage be eoiued ; that an income tax be levied, and that the Seerotary of the Treasury be au thorized to issue the necessary amount of 1ull legal tender greenbacks or United States Treasury notes, in order to meet the expenses of tli9 war with Spain and to sup ply the revenue deficit under the Diugloy bill. "While we deplore the war with Spain we pledge our earnest BUpport to tht government in all honorable ways to effect a speedy and successful conclusion of hos tilities. "Wo favor a union of the silver forces of the country iu the Congressional election, and cordially invite all other, without re gard to past political affiliations, to unite with 'us in supporting our candidates for Congress who favor the free coinage of silver, thus giving practical force and ef fect to the recommendation of our Demo cratic national chairman, Hon. James K. Jones, and to the Congressional Committee. We admire and commeud without stiut the great and gallant fight made by Hon. William J. Bryan in the last national cam paign, for the success of our party aud tho principles of our platform. "We denounce the scandal, extravagance, incompetency aud corruption of the pres ent Republican State administration. We denounce all enactments of the last two Legislatures by which the ci'.ies and towns in the State have been turned over to negro domination aud we pledge ourselves to enact such Hws as will give security and protection to the property and people of every town and community in the State. We denounce the placing of negroes on committees to supervise white schools and we pledge ourselves if restored to power, to enact such legislation as will make this impossible. We denounce all legislation enacted by the Legislatures of 18U." and for carrying out the base and partisan designs of the Kepublican party. "We denounce the placing of ignorant, irresponsible and corrupt men in office. We oppose the removal by corporations of suits or cases from our State to Federal Courts and favor legislation to prevent it. We f.ivor fair and just election laws. We favor a government or the people, by the people and for the people, economy iu ex penditures, the abolition of unnecessary offices, decency in administration, the con stant improvement of our educational system, charity to the unfortunates, and rule by the white men of the State. We favor the extension of the powers of the railroad commission and closo scrutiny iuio their affairs in order to ascertain, es tablish aud maintain such rates as shall be fair and just to the people and to the transportation and transmission corpora tions We favor the election of United States Senators and Railroad Comrniss-ion-ers by the people. We call attention to the wise, economical, honest and honorable administration of the affair of our State for twenty vears prior to the present lie publican administration aud promise the people a return of" wise, honest, economi cal and honorable administration under Democratic success. We call upon every believer in honor, Iioneoiy and economy, upon evory advocate of white supremacy. upon every advocate of equal and just tax ation, upon every advocate of the income tax and opponent of plundering tariff tax atiun, upon every advocate of the restora tion of silver and opponent ol the single gold standard aud the present issue of bonds as threatened by the Republican party, upon every opponent of government by injunction and advocate of the juris diction of State court3 over cases arising in the State against corporations doing business therein, upon every lover of de cency and good government and opponent of the present prevailing conditions, to unite with ns in our contest with the lie publican party, the great enemy of our principles, and aid us in redeeming the nation from the clutches of greed and iu- justice and the State from the scandal and incompetence which now afflicts it. We favor the enactment of such legislation as will encourage capital to make invest ments within our State and guarantee that the same shall be justly protected." S. M. Geary, Pierson, Mich., writes, '-De-Witt's Witch Hazel Salve is curing more piles here to-day than all other remedies combined. It cures eczema aud all other bkiu discuses." J. VV.
