Corprew, Whit Stubbs, Woodson Stubbs, Archie and Saml. Ilarrell and Loma Peal. This club nob only expects to play ball themselves, but hope to get a number of club3 to visit the town during the season. Objects to Vaults. Without seekinsr to obtain the views of our people throughout the county on the proposed erection of the .Record Vaults, we find many who object . to having placed upon them this burden. Our. people de clare that their taxes are already too high and that the vaults are not necessary, and if they are the county could make out with a small one at one-quarter the cost. This opposition is not raised by any partv or section. We have heard Republicans, Populists and Democrats condemn it. They feel that the County Commissioners should not have attempted to place such a debt upon the county without knowing the wish of the taxpayers, It is suggested by some that a move ment be made to prevent its erec tion. The Heroes of Heroes. Since the beginning of the Span ish-American war several heroes have come to light. Dewey in his capture of Manila, Worth Bagley in his bravery at tho first battle oil Cuba. But now comes the hero of heroes, Lieutenant llobson, who sailed through the valley of death at Santiago. Admiral Sampson was sure he had the Spanish fleet in the harbor, and to keep them there he wanted to ob struct the channel. To do this one of his boats had to enter-tfie harbor and by her crew be sunk in the proper place. The boat selected to be thus plan tea was tne coiner Jier- nmac, ana on nciay iasc iiumirai Sampson made known his intention and asked for volunteers to do the mighty deed. Four thousand men offered their services, from which only seven were to be selected. It looked like tho aoing of tho deed meant death, for as the ship should steam into the harbor there would be poured upon her shot and shell from forts on both sides, while the Spanish fleet would add its force to the onslaught. But with these facts facing them, men begged to go and die, if needs be, for the flag. Lieutenant llobson and six men were selected. After making all things ready Lt. llobson, (who by the way is a descendent of North Carolina, being a grand-son of J ndge Pearson) and his brave men steamed away on the Merrimac, into the entrance of bantiago harper. As soon as she entered the harbor all guns were turned upon her, but she moved on until sne reacnea tne point selected: there in a perfect storm of lead, she was brought to, and with all tho coolness of his na ture, Lt. llobson anchored his boat and takinc: his men on deck, dis charged the internal torpedo which sent the craft to the bottom to be an obstacle in the way of the Spanish fleet's escape. After this was done the men deserted the ship in a small boat and were captured by the Spanish, not one of them being kil led and only two slightly wounded. After their capture Admiral Cervera sent a boat with a flag of truce to the American fleet to tell the news of their escape and give assurance to Admiral Sampson that Ins men were safe, and that they would be exchanged for Spanish prisoners. Such heroism ha3 never been witnessed before. CRESWELL CHIPS. PICKED UP BY TWO ' BEACON" LASSIES. EditobJand Fbiends: June Cth. -"" .
