Quite a number of our people attended the Association at Smith's Creek last week, among them were, Mr. and Mrs. Jos, Skittletharpe, and Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Harrison. Some of our merchants are complaining that they are getting in counterfeit dollars. Be careful, there may be lots of them in circulation. Be sure the dollar has that glorious sound, the "free silver jingle," to it before you take it. Mrs. A. M. Ayers has opened a nice line or millinery goods in Mrs, . &., Blount's old stand on Water street. She has had the good fortune to secure the services of Mrs. J. F. Yeager, as trimmer, whose artistic work is well known , to oar people. We wislj Mrs. Ayers great sue cess. The young people of this town christen ed the new City IIu Wednesday night with a delightful dance. This, the first of the season, was largely attended and quite a success, but lack of space forbids our giving a more extended notice. We regret to know that so few of the business men of Plymouth are taking an active interest in the efforts that are being made to restore good government. It teems to ns that the property owners should be among the leaders in this fight. While at Eoper on Saturday last we visited the bugpy and undertaker's estab lishment of Mr. S. J. Barcoe, where We fauud a large stock of fine coffins, caskets aud burial cases, acd, a number of nice vehicles. Mr. Barcoe is putting up some fine work, which he will talk about next week. The White Government Union of Plymouth township met in the Court House Tuesday night, the attend- nace though small was enthusiastic. After the transaction of business, S. B. Spruill, Esn., made a short, but able and pointed speech which was greeted with almost continuous ap plause. Mr. II, S. Ward was called on and responded in a few remarks that were full of encouragement to lovers of good government. lne next meeting of the Union is to be held at the Dismal school house on Wednesday night next. On Tuesday night, Oct. 18th" the Union will meet in the Court House and an invitation is extended to the ladies of the community to be present Hon. Harrv btubbsand, other dis tinguished speakers have been invit ed to entertain the people. Capt. Held in Command. It will be remembered that we noted the fact a few weeks ago that Capt. J. E. Reid had tendered his resignation as Captain of the Roa noke Kifles. This action was re gretted by the many friends of the Company, who will be glad to learn that he is again in command. At a meeting of the Company held at the armory last Iriday, Capt. Kcid was requested to withdraw his resignation and again take charge of the Company, which he consented to do after the request wa3 made by a unanimous vote of the members. Let us hope that the members of this Company will take even greater interest in it than ever before, and that there may be a lull attendance at every drill. We learn that quite a number of our town people expect to loin the Company at once. A Convention of the Democratic party of Washington county will be held at Pleasant Grove School House, near Mackey's Ferry, Tues day the 11th day of October 1898, between the hours of 10 a. m., and p. m., for the purpose of nomina ting a candidate to represent the county in the next General Assem bly of N. C, and candidates for other county offices. I he Chairmen of the Precinct Committees will call their primaries for the appointment of delegates to to this convention, on Saturday Oct. 8th at 3 o'clock p. m., at their, re spective voting places. I he .Exec- tive Committee of each voting, pre cinct is requested to attend this convention for the purpose of elec ting a County hiXecutive Committee. There will be a barbecue, public speaking by two of the most distin- uished political speakers m the State, an escort of 100 mounted marshals, and a brass band m attendance. Edmtjxp Alexander, Chm.
