Six months after the election complaints were filed against some of the best citizens of Pitt count;, charging them with intimidating voters. It is saii that the complaint was made on the affidavit of a man who had to make his mark. The case was heard last week and seven Populists and one negro were examined, out of this number only one testified that anybody was in timidated, or that , the casting of a vote was prevented. Thus the po litical persecution fails. Since agitating the celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of Washington county, our attention has been called to the fact that a very large per cent of our population now is not native born. So it is, but our adopted citizens will take an equal interest in the glorious event, and it will be an occasion which will call from the utmost parts of the globe, our native born who have wandered far from the parental i-oof. They will come back in per son, by letter or fond memory to the scenes of earliest life, thus making the event one of rejoicing and thanks giving. Not only will those who first awoke beneath the Southland's azure skies and whose first cries were wafted from the cradled recesses by the Albemarle's gentle breezes, but their descendants will long to visit ilici ancestral home. . t us make this event one of such a character as will be a univer sal bidding to the sons and daugh ters, native or adopted, of Washing ton county. Let us write as it were in blazon letters across the canopy of the heavens which overhang us, WELCOME. Let us hope to tiring, through his descendants, the redman wfth his tomahawk and bow, who arrayed in his skins and furs roamed at large through the wilds or paddled his bark canoe upon the placid streams, three hundred years ago. Certainly we may hope to bidta hearty welcome to the descendants of the past 100 years, and to the old families of honored memory the Pettigrews, Goelets, Norcoms, Col lins, Chessons, Blounts, Buucombs, Spruills, Normans, and others. Discovered by a Woman. Another great discovery has been made, and that too, by a lady in this country. 'Disease fastened its clutches upon her and for seven years she withstood its se verest tests, but her vital organs wero un dermined and death seemed imminent. Fer three months she couched inctssently, and could not sleep She finally discover ed a way to recovery,-by purchasing of us a bottle of Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, and was so much relieved on taking first dose, that she slept all night; and with two bottles, has been absolutely cured. Her name is Mrs. Luther Lut2 " Thus writes W. C. Ham nick & Co., of Shelby, N. C. Trial bottles free at Ply mouth Drug Store, liegular size 50o aud $1.00. SHALL WE CELEDUATK ? In view of the fact that this is the Centennial Anniversary of Wash ington county, Thk Beacon some time ago suggested that we should celebrate this event in fitting man ner. This suggestion seems to have met the approval of many of our citizens. The day on which Washington county was formed was December 20th 1799, but owing to the usual inclement weather about that time, aud the fact that it is the centennial year, Mr. Thos. W. Blount, of Ko jper, in a letter to the editor, sug gests that July 4th be utilized fur the occasion. Referring further to this subject Mr. Blount says : "We could invite our mother, Tyr rell ; our grand-mother, Chowan, and oui elder sister, Martin, to send a delegation to join us in the good time. "There could be papers read on the part Washington county took iti the war of the rebellion : the Mexi can war; the war of 1812; her gen eral progress ; on her 70 years with Tyrrell, 1720-1799 ; and the 70 years she served as a part of Chowan precinct, lUbU-172'J. "Some member of the bar might write an interesting paper on the lawyers of the South Albemarle; and doubtless somo one could be found who could make a success of the 'Prominent Families' of the 'South Shore' as our Chowan breth ren used to call us." This is an important event in the history of our county, and we hope that a patriotic and enthusiastic demonstration may be had. To make such a big success will require the united efforts of all our people, and if the date suggested by Mr. Blount meets the approval of the people (and we feel sure it will) they should take action at once. Let each town ship call a mass meeting of the citi zeus at some convenient place, say on Saturday next, June 3rd. Let these township meetings appoint 5 delegates to meet in a county meet ing at Roper on Tuesday JuneGth at 12 o'clock. At the township meetings let the questions be discussed as to the best point at which to hold the celebra tion ; let this meeting also appoint a committee on arrangements; a com mittee on finauce; a committee on entertainment, these committeess thus appointed to act with and un der the direction of the county com mittees to be appointed for same services. We hope the people all over the county will take an active interest in this matter and not wait for fa ther instructions. There must be a starting point, and we hope the peo Thin. nale. i ' o oi I need a fatty food to enrich their blood, give color to their cheeks and restore their health and strength.
