There was rather au unfortunate scene in the depot at wasiungton on Thursday morning last. It seems 1 11 1 I! tliat a stranger naa insuuea a iaay on the street the day before and her relatives took the matter in nana and went to . the depot with her, where ahe identified one Mr. Wood ard as being the man who had in. suited her. Without further notice m m 1 . L a I or proor said relatives set io wuik with horsewhips to avenge the wrong. After giving the, poor, defenseless man a severe whipping he was ord ered to leave town and never return. He left, but returned on Saturday with cdunsel and friends to establish his innocence, after having been as sured protection by the Mayor of the town. Mr. Woodard is from Warsaw, a highly respected and honorable citi zen, and his friends were justly in dignant that he should have been accused of and punished for such an offense. On his return to Washington his assailants were arrested and tried for the crime and fined. Then a meeting was arranged between him and the young lady, at which time the lady admitted that she had made a serious mistake in identifying Mr, Woodard. We are glad to know that his in- m i a l nocence was iuny estaonsned ana that the matter was amicably ad lust ed. But our citizens, while they should ever be ready to protect and defend our ladies, should be careful and know that their vengeance is not wreaked upon an innocent man.
