OLD JAKE ALECK. THE PROCRASTINATOR AND II IS CHECK. Old Jake Aleck wrote : "Dear Saooks, my friend, You're quite well, I hope. Ilaye you cash to leuct ? This little con game of Jake's worked and Snooks Meat him a neat check. He was touched, as it were, and oouldu't resist. 'My check book 1" loudly Saookey thun dered. "I'll eeud old Jake this day fivn hundred." Now poor Old Jakey wouldn't fail, For Snooksey's check wa) iu the mail. When Jakey yot it, he dreamed and won dered. He kept on dreaming till he blundered. Old Jake placed the check in an old en velope and put it in hie insHe pocket ; then he went off to dreamland again. lie was geared for blow raciug aud would not work in harness with Snookey. Old Jake Aleck lacked common tiense ; Experience he'd plenty, but his head seemed deusa. For his companions were shoestring fakirs. The time he wasted would pay for acres. He couldu't distinguish recompense, Yet always hunted fur schemes immense. Jake paid no attention to clocks and could never connect with any fixed time. Trains always left three weeks before ha could get his collar and lunch packed. Jake held the check, which puzzied Snooks Who couldu't Btraighteu his books. The bank had boodle to Snook's credit, But Snooksy swore 'twas he "in debt" 'it, "There's trouble," he said, "the way things look, It's hard to tell who's not a crook." By the time Old Jake's deoinion came to focus circumstances were so changed that he couldn't remember what his decisiou was intended for, Again Jake wrote: "My Snook sy, dear, I'm up against it sure, I fear. Your check is all the cash I own. I'll turn it in. It makes us groan." At this Suooks swore, and with a sneer, Said : "I'll teach him to hold my checks u ytar." Jake was "up against it" again for sure, for Suooksy whs a cuuuing crank when he realized he was getting the "hot end," and he resolved to dump his friend Jake in the swill. So to the bauk Old Snooksy went And drew his dollars every cen When Jake called in to cash bis check The teller said : "Yes, in your neck !" Then Jakey gasped : "I need my rent."
