Sr. Editor: In your last issue I noticed a com muication from Democrat vecom lending Gen. W. P. Roberts of Gates r Congress, which I wish to notice -not that I have a word to say against en. Roberts or a scintilla of objec on to the sentiment breathed in le communication, but to call amocrat's attention to some facts lat he may have overlooked : First of all, Gen. Roberts is not ne of the neglected heroes of the onfederate war. He was a brave ldier and a fearless and competent 3Sccr, and as such reGected credit pon his section, and his State, for Jhich we all loved and honored him, lid love and honor him still. Few eu have received more recognition tr their service to their country and eir party than has Gen. Roberts. irst by his county as Representa ve, then by his btate as Auditor, tad, lastly by his Nation as Consul a i foreign port. It affords me easure to say that in all of these ihsitions Gen. Roberts made honor- pie history for the section from hjch he hailed as well as the party bat placed him in position but he not a neglected hero of the Con- derate war. Beside Gen. Roberts as a Confederate soldier, and those f us who wore the gray in the six es know that the interregnum of irty years removes us to the shady de of life, and by physical infirmity, nders us in many ways incapable '. discharging the many and ard ti ps duties of a high functionary such Congressman aud that we must ave these duties to the hands of Iher and younger men men in the eridian of their physical aud meu- 11 manhood, with the hope that ley will protect U3 in our old age as e protected them in their youth, lad such a man we have in the per n of Hon. John II. Small, our resent Representative. J It goes without saying that neither before nor since the war has the First District had a more faithful or effi cient Representative in Congress. Then why seek to remove it? Is it because of his vote in favor of an appropriation for fast mail service between Washington and New Or leans? In view of the tact that Democratic platforms, both State and National, have condemned Sub sidies and trusts of all kinds, this vote, viewed frem a partisan stand point, strictly construed, might seem irregular and undemocratic. But the question of fast mails for the ex treme South was more of a sectional than a partizan matter, and as a Southern patriot and States an, Mr. Small cast his vote for the best interests of the South as he saw it. The South gets none too much of the monies appropriated by Congress, ttnd when an effort is made by any body or any party to benefit any part of the South by any appropriation, he is a narrow-minded Southern Statesman who would allow any sickly political sentiment to make him oppose it. We agree with Mr. Small in this matter of appropria tion for fast mail service for the ex treme South, and believe that the people of the Fiist District who are Southern to the core, broad-minded, and patriotic will give him their en dorsement by practically a unani mous vote for re-nomination. To retire Mr. Small at this time would be a blunder that the Democrats of the First District are not likely to make. Mhe inland waterway, the dream of decades, now Hearing its realization, through the indefatig able efforts of Mr. Small is a great question too near the hearts of the voters of the First District to be jeopardized by the election of new man. So it is a safe prediction to say that Mr. Small will be re-nominated and returned to Congress by an almost unanimous vote, Voter, in Edenton Transcript.
