Kin?, who has retired as tj .viqe-prosident of the Norfolk und ooutliern Utiilway, arter twenty seven years of continual service with that company, was asked to-day for a statement, lie said: "I have only to say that the appoint ment of Mr. Fitzgerald is invorable for the property. He is a thoroughly trained railroad man, and, his met hods .are well adapted to accomplish the pnrpose.eougilt by his 'selection fpr the receivership. . '.I; shall remain in Norfolk; .What ever of 8u'oee.-J3 I have attained;, dur ihz twenty-eiL'ht years of mv con nection with the Norfolk and South ern . Railroad has been won through. the esteem and confidence of (the people of Norfolk and Eastern North Carolina. "I have many friends among those prople and, very naturally, I feel that I can accomplish more among thum and theconditions larmiliar to me than among strangers. My working days are by no means over.1' The Reason." There being doubt iu the minds of some as to the reason for (Calling the (Jomm'Ssional (Jon volition- to gether at the early hour ot 0 a. m. the chairman deems it proper to an nounce that the Executive Commit tee decided upon this hour in order that the delegates from the north side of the sound could leave for their homes on the same day, after the convention adjourned. A. L. Pendleton, Cho. Dem. Con, Ex. Coim Our" Express Office.' Our people are justly 1 proud of t)ie steady advancement Plymouth ,has made iu recent.years iu all lines. The Express ofiice is a big conveni ence, but it being 4ycated so far from the business eeute'jy, , has for years been a great inconvenience, but re cently the ofHce has been moved up town, next to post, ofhtv, and not only this, a wagon has In en put on which collects aud distributes the Express, thanks to the efforts of the clever Agent, Mr. li. A Wtlliford. Mr. K. C. iJ irreti, Kotite Agenr of the .Sou-hern Express Co., was here this week checkiug up the business of the ollh:e. We are Mire he found everything in good siiaM. Mr. Singleton Takes Oath. Mr. J no. h). Singleton, who was recently appointed to 11 i i the vatun ct on the Board of Commissioners caused by the death of Mr. dain'l li. Johnston, was present Monday, took the oath of oflice aud entered upon the discharge of his duties as oue of the guardians of the county. Mr. biugleton is a successful far me living near Koper, in Lee's Mills Township. he isamuu of bioad mind. careful m matters ot business, and thoroughly interested in the auairs of his county and Mate. Just on the eve of the convention his name was prominently and favorably men tioned in connection with the Dem ocratic nomination for Kepreseuta- tive, but his name was almost unan imously endorsed by the county for County Commissioner, so he goes on the ticket and will be his own suc cessor to the office to which he was recently appointed. The sentiment of the people is that the, affairs of the county will be in safe hands with Mr. Singleton, Sheriff lilount and Mr. Spruill. That's Correct, We'd Do It. A gentleman at lloper said: "If The Beacon Man hud the cash he would build up Plymouth aud Ro per until they would just be one big town." That's correct brother, we would make it a town of towns. Wo would build mills and factories. We would turn the fertile fields along the way into city lots with paved streets ar t! all manner of improvements. We would build an electric car linefrom Plymouth to Koper and around bv Mackey Ferry, there back of Will. Davenport's farm on the Sound, we would build a magnificent pavilion, there beneath the sighing pines, on a point over looking the grand old Albemarle whose silvery waves in ceaseless murmurs ever wash its sandy shores, we would, build re sort "that would lay Cape May in the shade. . " But we are building air castles, so we will stop beiore some genius at tempts to erect a lightning-rod on one oi them. It is possible to build such a town but it takes money, push and confi dence to do it. Our people have some of each, let them use it. The 'Summer School. The Summer School for White Teachers of Washington county will be held at, Plymouth Graded School July 20 to August 7th inclusive. Attendance compulsory. Bring your State adopted Arithmetic,. Urammar, Geography and History. C. J. EvERETT, Co., Supt. Best the World Affords. "It oivea me unbounded nleasnra to recommend Bucklen's Arnica Br.lve," says J. W. Jenkins, of Chapel Hill, N. C. 'I am oonviheed - it's the'best salve the world affords It cared a felon on my thumb, and it never fails to heal every sore, burn or wound to which it is applied. 25o. at Spruill & Bro's. Plymouth Township Primary The Democratio Primary Conven tion held iu the Court House last Saturday was the largest attended we have ever seen in this towushiu. The Beacon Job Department has th is week issued a mammoth poster for Adler ltro's, advertising their big 15 day Force Sale wnicli begins next Wednesday, July 15th. . It takes such progressive, hustling, wide-a-wako business men as Adler Bro's, to let people know a town is living. Getting up an I distributing this advertisement throughout tne country, with the great prizes they will give away free, will cost this firm something like one hundred dollars, it will in time pay them a big return aud at the same time it will help advertise Plymouth. Let other merchants fall in line with Adler liro's. Put a move on your own business and it wilt put a move on the whole town. Stop talking about . the people sending to mail order houses in New York and other places. Advertise what you have to sell, make th-0 price an inducement? Invite the people to visit Plymouth and your store. Fct the people iu the habit of com ing or sending to Plymouth, to ou, for the goods they want. Wauanaker spends more f6rKad vertising in one week than all the merchants in Washington county" epenjJr.in a year, yet you 8:iy tho peo rfeoug:Ut,not to order goods from "Wanamaker. Wanamaker invites their trade,he keeps hu goods and after, the trade like the mail order houses do and you will get it. , Let a stranger pick up this papor and ho might think that Tom Gay lord, Mrs. Aye rs and Adler were the only merchants in Plymouth, lhey are the only ones that are publicly inyiting the people to trade with them.
