ROPER NEWS. The Bank of Roper, will .be closed Tuesday, July 4th, ac count of holiday. There will be no special celebration by the white people this year as stated in last week's paper, the time being too short in which to get up the necessary attractions. The colored people will have a big celebration under the auspi ces of the Odd Fellows. Cards have been received here announcing the marriage of Mr. B. T. Davenport of Raleigh, N. C, to Miss Kuth Christie at the latter's home in Newport News, Va., June 22nd. After a short hridal trin to Washington and New York, the happy couple are no at spending a few days with his parents at Mackeys, before going to their future home in Raleigh. Dr. Halsey made a brief trip to Norfolk Thursday, returning Friday. ' Elmer H. Spruill, Asst. Cash ier of The Bank of Roper, and Wilbur Herrington spent several days in Norfolk last week, re turning Sunday. Mrs. L. L. Lewis and children returned Monday from an ex tended visit to friends and rela tives in Gatesville. The infant child of Mr. J. T. Snell of Mackeys died Monday night and was laid to rest in the family plot Tuesday afternoon, Rev. F. F. Eure conducting the burial service. Mess. ,G. Hoof nagle and Gro ver Sell of Edenton were guests pi friends here on Sunday. Mr. George Pappendick of E. City spent several days here re cently the guest of Miss Carrie Clagon. J. L. Clegg of Norfolk is visit ing friends here. Miss Mary Colon Jackson of Creswell will arrive Saturday to visit her- cousins, the Misses Peacock in Boush St. Mr. Russell Muir. Misses Maude and Ruth Hooten and Mrs. George Raiff of Belhaven motored over and spent several hours here Sunday. Vernon Leary returned from Norfolk Tuesday accompanied by his little daughter. Miss Francis Leary of Portsmouth, Va., and Annie Grace and Wa verly Dickens of Harrisburg, Va., who will spend some time with Mr. and Mrs. J. S, Leary in Boush St. H. M. Jacobs, Store Manager of the J. L. Roper L. Co., and J. 0. Highsmith are in Baltimore this week on business. Misses Carrie Lee and Wilma V. Clark returned Tuesday after a several weeks visit to relatives in Norfolk, Miss Hyacinth Chesson is vis iting her aunt, Mrs. W. J. Priv ott, in Edenton this week, John W. Chesson was painful ly though not seriously injured Monday afternoon -while icing his store refrigerator, by a cake of ice slipping and striking his left foot. Three bids for carrying the U. S. Mail in autos between Ro per and Mackeys have been re ceived by the local Post-master in case of refusal of the Railroad Co., to transport the mails on and after July 1st. It is hoped, however, that such an arrange ment will not be necessary as it . will greatly interfere with busi ness, j The condition of crops in this section is generally satisfactory, the growth of cotton being ef fected somewhat by the frequent rains of the past two or three weeks, which also keeps our farmers busy keeping down the grass.
