Homicide in Bertie County
A 'phone message from Sheriff
Cooper of Bertie County passed
through Plymouth last night
soon after eight o'clock for Mi.
J. W. Shores of E. City to come
at once with his dogs. "
From what could be learned
from the messages, Mr. Roy P.
White, a prominent young- man
living between Woodard and
Windsor had murdered his wife,
and the dogs were wanted to
help trace him down.
The circumstances, as best we
could learn them, are that Mrs.
White was found dead late yes
terday evening with her head
crushed in and a broken gun near
her, and that a note was found
written by Mr. White stating
that he had killed his wife, two
men and himself. -The other
men are yet very much alive and
White was seen late in the day
going towards Steel's Landing.
Mr. bnores, witn ms aogs, ar
rived here on the 12:30 train
this morning and were at once
taken in a gas boat to the scene
of the tragedy.
Mrs. Claudia E. Phelps
Dead.
Mrs. wauoia iu- rneijps, aged
59 years and widow of the late
H. Walter Phelps, tlied at her
home in Creswell, this county,
on Sunday morning 'last, after
an illness of a few weeks from
complications following an at
tack of measles.
Mrs. Phelps is survived by
one brother, Sheriff W. J. Starr.
She leaves no children but a
number of near relatives and a
host of friends to mourn her
death. She had been a faithful
and consistent member of the
M. E. Church since early child
hood and was Jfved and revered
by all who knew her.
The funeral services were held
from the M. P. Church Monday
afternoon, the interment being
made in the family plot on the
old homestead near the town,
Rev. B. T. Hurley of Plymouth
conducting the last sad rites.
The high esteem in which the
deceased was held was attested
by the profuse and beautiful
floral offerings and the large
concours of loving friends, not
only of the town, but from miles
around, who gathered to pay
this last tribute to her memory.
Indeed a truly good woman
has gone to her eternal reward.
