As you follow the Mr. Chas. L. Latham and fam ily spent a few days visiting relatives here this week. Mr. Latham is the oldest son of the late Major L. C. Latham of this town. He is now American Con- sui to Dundee, Scotland, and is at home for a few weeks vacation. through life, may your acts and your examples be such as to. prove an in spiration to others who are yet groping in the shadows of existence. Wa wish you a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and a prosperous and extended journey through life. Literary Club Meets. The Thursday Afternoon Lit erary Club met with Mrs. Clar ence Latham on last Thursday star of Destiny afternoon. The occasion was a BEACON FLASHES. The express office has become quite popular this week. Mr. W. A. Swain of Mackeys was in town Wednesday. .Mr. E, R. Spruill of Skinners ville was in town Wednesday. Mrs. W. F. Ausbon made a short visit to Washington thisJ week. fiss Eoline Everett will be home from Greensboro Col'ege t jday. Miss Lillian Chesson is home from school to spend the Xmas holidays. Mr. E. F. Spruill of Cherry made us a short call while in the city this week. Mr. R. S. Swain of Roper was a, welcome visitor to our office while in town Monday. Attorneys Van B. Martin and Zeb Vance Norman spent a few days in Norfolk this week. Miss Sadie Ausbon came home yesterday from Blacks tone, (Va.) College to spend the holidays. Atty. W. B. Rodman, Jr., of Washington was in our city on professional business Wednesday Mrs. A B Litchfield and little son of Swan Quarter, are here, the guests of Mrs. Clarence Latham Mr. J, H. Hamilton, Jr., of Greenville is here to spend the holidays with his parents, near town. Nrs. Geo. S. Swain of Suffolk Va., is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs. C. V. Norman, on 3rd Street. Mis. S. D. Jones of New Jer sey is the guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Chesson, on Jefferson Street. glowing success, as many inter esting papers were read pertain ing . to music, its origin and growth. MrsR. W. Johnston and Mr. E. P. Crouch rendered a number of delightful piano and cornet duets. Those present were, Mesdames W. R. Hampton, N. Tucker, R. P. Walker, J. W. Blount, H. A. Blount, L. P. Hornthal, R. W. Johnston and S. A. Ward. The Bridge Club Meets. Last Tuesday the Bridge Club was entertained by Mrs. Jos. W. Blount. At the beginning of the ses sion each guest was presented with a tiny hand painted calen dar as a tally card and favor. After a thoroughly enjoyable series of games a delightful salad course was served. Those present were, Mesdames J M Horton, W B Watts, Con way Newman, I. Miss Isabel McAllister is home for the holidays from the State Normal at Greensboro. J. W. Buchanan is unloading a car of Fords which he expects to dispose ox as soon as unloaded. Carrie Lee and W Ini l Clark of Biackstone College for Girls will arrive Friday evening; for the holidays. Joe Nowrrah was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital this week for treatment, suffering from a form of paralysis. W. C. Thompson and daughter Miss Reita, left Monday for Nor folk where Miss Reita will con sult a specialist and possibly take treatment. Miss Mary Hicks left Sunday for her home in Hillsboro, Md., having had charge of the milli nery dept. of the J. L. Roper L. Co. the past season. Miss Ethel Bailey left Monday for Norfolk where she has ac cepteed a position as teacher in a business College. She expects to return home how-ever, for the holidays, Asa F. Johnston has been not ified of his appointment as Post Master here to succeed J. W. Williams resigned. He will qual ify for the position at once and hopes to take charge about Jan. 1st.
