THE ROANOKE BEACON C. V. W. AUSBON EJiior. .njpubii.sCT. c. S. AUSBON PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. Plymouth, N. C, Friday, February 23, 1917. Owing to the late continued rains complaint is going up from ail over the country about bad roads, and ours are no exception to the general rule. v These conditions will continue to exist until our people learn to realize that the building and up keep of roads is not a tax, but an investment, and that no money or labor expended for this pur pose tends to enhance the value of farm property so surely and rapidly as does that spent for the improvement of public high ways. The other day we expressed the belief that if drags were left with farmers for every mile or two and after a rainy spell they were all put to work with donat. ed, or even hired team, it would work out better than the present system, with only one gang at work, as they can cover so little road in a given. A gentleman standing by who has lived there remarked that almost every far mer in Illinois owns a road drag and that when weather condi tions are like they are here now they keep them running with their own force, and take as much pride in the roads passing their property as they do in cul tivating their crops, and that in other states he has seen the same being done. It is only a matter of higher education among the farmers and a realization of what is real ly an investment, the same as at tractive homes and well cultivat ed crops. If this plan works so well in other states, why not here?
