THE PATH OF PROFIT AND SAFETY. The following article taken from the Norfolk Virginian-Pi-Ict cf Tuesday, under the above captor., should be read with nvre limn passing interest by the fanners of this section be- fore the crops are planted for this year : 'There are some phases of the present world situation so patent that- it is difficult to understand how anybody not afflicted with the blindness that will not pass can fail to recognize or to read them aright. One of these is the obtrusive fact that an extraordi narily heavy demand for food strfts. with consequent and cor respouuingly high prices, is beiunl to continue for at least another twelve months, regard less cf what the developments may b? in the meantime in con nection with the conflict already embracing more than half the population and area of the globe and seriously threatening to ex tend its scope- Thanks to a shortage in food crops last year, which was practically world wide, and to conditions created by the great war now in its third year, practically all the nations of the earth, including the Unit ed States, will enter the next harvest virtually barren of food supplies This is a fact not to be altered by anything which may happen in the interim and is al together independent of wheth er our diplomatic break with Germany shall eventuate in ac tual war or whether the conflict in Europe shall end before the close of the coming Summer or be pi ;iO: i:d fin itely Should unfavorable this season, .:.re, -?sult in a iv o irr ot weather evyi''; or a decrea I a yield beiw t':. world would be u little short of fa average, the nfn-nt'.'d with conditions in regard to foodstuffs. 'The situation is one which carries a lesson for the whole country, but particularly for the farmers of the South. This les son is to devote the largest pos sible acreage to the growing of food products. As the Manufac turers' Record, stressing what his been pointed .out time and r.;:air!. declares : 'The South might raise too big a cotton crop fcr its own prosperity, but it can not raise too big a grain crop or too much live-stock.' Every available acre should be put to the production of food and forage and to the raising of cattle, sheep and hogs, and to that end every possible influence that can be legitimately brought to bear should be promptly and vigorously exerted that of the bankers, of the merchants and of the business men generally. In that way, and in that way alone, lis certain independence i?r the Southern farmers and th assurance of continued pros perity for the tillers of the soil as individuals and as a class and for the section as a whoie. To pursue any other course will be not only to neglect a great op portunity, but to invite, if not insure, disaster which might well prove overwhelming in its proportions." NOTICE OF SALE.
