NO PLACE TO HANG PICTURE Child Could Not Carry Out Teacher's Instructions Because His Home Had No Walls. A young teacher of this city, home from kindergarten work In a large eastern city, told this story, which she vouches for. The teacher was anxious to improve the home life of the little foreigners she taught, so she bought some inexpensive pictures and gave one to each child, asking that the pic ture be hung on the wall of the home. One little foreigner took the picture with evident reluctance, and the next day brought it back and handed it to the teacher. "WThy didn't you hang it on the wall like the others did, instead of bringing it back?" teacher asked. In the expla nation that followed it developed that the youngster lived in a large loft room, with four other families besides its own. UCiiUiB KYK iUSMJUT CO., CHICAGO The Message from Golgotha in III By REV. B. B. SUTCLIFFE Of the Extension Department. Moody Biblo Institute, Chicago TEXT Thy crucified liim. and the malefactors, one on tlie right hand, and the othtr on the left. Luke 23:33. Pomo lime ago there was exhibited iu the city of Chicago a large picture called "Golgotha." It was a represen tation of the scene when Jesus and the two thieves were crucified. In the midst of the crowd and rising from the brow of the hill there were to be seen the three crosses upon which w e re the forms of those cru cified. The wood en crosses have Ion? since fallen into decay, but the messages given from them are still to be beard. The Center Crosa. From the center cross there comes the message that provision has been made for the taking away of man's sin. This provision bus been made by God alone. He needed no assistance from man. The prophet has said that It pleased the Lord to bruise him; he has put him to grief (Isaiah 53:10). Peter has declared that our Lord was delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God (Acts 2:23). And Taul has declared "God commend ed his love toward us In that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). It will be seen that this provision has been made by God through sacrifice, for Jesus was the Lamb of God taking away the sin of the world (John 1:29). He was the fulfillment of the types of the Old Tes tament. The coat of skins wherewith Adam was clothed, the blood of the lamb which protected the people in Egypt on the Passover night, the offer ings of blood of Leviticus, and all the slain beasts offered in sacrifice, point to the fundamental truth that "without the shedding of blood there Is no re mission" (Hebrews 9:22). Not only Is this provision made by God alone and by sacrifice, but it is made by the sacrifice of a substitute. Long before Christ came, the prophet had declared that "he was to be wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our in iquities. All we like sheep have gone astray and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all" (Isaiah 53:5, 6). And when at last that substitute came, Peter declared that he "his own self bare our sins In his own body on the tree" (I Peter 2:24). This one upon the center cross is there in man's place, standing in man's stead, the sub stitute to whom is charged all of man's sin , the sacrifice, blotting out by his own blood, the iniquity of man. This one is God's provision for the taking away of man's transgression. The Second Cross. The second cross brings us a mes sage of salvation received. It speaks to us first of all of a realization of the need for a substitute, and also convic tion of sin. When the thief cried, "Lord remember me," he was voicing the plea of the publican, "God be mer ciful to me the sinner." This is fol lowed by faith In him. It is one thing to have faith, it is another to have faith in the proper object. Faith in deed saves us, but It is faith in Christ alone. One may have good faith in a bank, and yet lose his money, not because there was anything wrong with the faith, but because there was something wrong with the object of i the faith. One may have good faith in many things and lose his soul, not because there is anything wrong with the faith, but because that faith has not been centered in the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone is God's provision for man's sin. This dying thief could not come down from the cross and go back over his record and undo the I things which he had done. He could ! not make restitution ; he could not blot I mi Vila Trnfrr nnr ivna Tin flvnn time I to come from the cross and live a good and upright life, but if he were saved at all, he had to be saved by what Christ did and not by anything which he could do added to what Christ had done. The Third Cross. The message from the third cross speaks of the insanity of sin. There is a story told of a young man who had committed a crime for which he was tried and found guilty and sen tenced to a penitentiary. After he had been placed in the prison, his mother, at the expense of a great deal of time and care, and with many tears, finally succeeded in securing for him pardon from the governor of the state. With Joyous heart, feeling well repaid for the long weeks of ceaseless effort, she went to the penitentiary bearing Ihe precious pardon which would liberate her boy. When at last she stood in his presence with tears of joy in her eyes, she hnnded to her boy his par don. Instead of being grateful, and in stead of ncceptlng and making use of the pardon, the boy deliberately tore it into pieces, throwing it upon the floor, and stamped upon it with disdain. It is thus that the sinner who rejects God's proffered salvation treats what God has to offer. It is the In sanity of sin leading on to suicide of the soul. All one has to do to commit soul suicide is to reject God's grace. in J LA SlWfSfflOOL Lesson (By E. O. SELLERS, Acting Director of the Sunday School Course of the Moody Bible Institute.) (Copyright, 1917, Western Newspaper Union.) LESSON FOR MAY 20 THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-CON-TROL TEMPERANCE LESSON. LESSON TEXT Isa. 28:1-13. GOLDEN TEXT Every man that striv eth for the mastery Is temperate in all things. I Cor. 9:25. Wine in the Scriptures is spoken of under four aspects. First, social, that as illustrated by Its use at the mar riage in Cana. We must not, however, confuse this wine with the spirituous, strong drink of this present day. Sec ond, medicinal (Pro v. 31 :f-7 ; 1 Tim. 5:23). These passages do not com mand us to use it as such, and God has very graciously revealed to us in modern medical research the futil ity of the use of alcohol in the matter of medicine as a remedy. Third, sacri ficial wine (Matt. 26 :27-29 ; Luke 22 :17 20), and, fourth wine is spoken about as productive of the woes of men (See Amos 6:1; Heb. 2:15; Prov. 23:20). It is also mentioned by way of contrast (See Eph. 5:18). The Scriptures speak of drunkards in four different ways: (1) They are to be stoned (Deut. 21 :20) ; (2) Drunk ards lead to poverty (Prov. 23 :21) ; (3) Drunkards are to be separated from other men (I Cor. 5:11); (4) they are to be finally separated from God (I Cor. 6:9). Abstinence from strong drink is en joined in the Scriptures under three heads: (1) the priest and Nazarite (Num. 6:3; Luke 1:15); (2) the ruler (Prov. 31:4); (3) those who are to worship Jehovah (Lev. 10:3). This particular lesson is taken from a portion of Isaiah's prophecy where he is anticipating what is about to hap pen to Samaria, and uttering his warn ings unto .Tudah. ' I. The Steps of Intemperance. First, Disgrace and Dishonor (v. 1). The city of Samaria is compared to a chaplet of flowers on a drunkard's brow, which shall be 'trodden under foot because of his inebriety. Drunk enness seemed to have been so wide spread as to become a national sin. Second, Disease and Degeneracy (v. 2). The pride of beauty spoken of in verse one is to "fall to the earth." This glorious beauty was after all only a "fading flower" (I Pet. 1:24). The coming of the Assyrians upon Samaria is described in a three-fold way: (1) As a "tempest of hail"; (2) as a "de stroying storm ;" (3) as a "tempest of mighty waters overflowing." The thought contained is that of wide spread and overwhelming destruction. Back of this work of devastation and destruction and desolation was the wrath of God against sin (Ch. 2:4-9). All earthly pride shall be trodden un der foot. Samaria, "a fading flower," was to be greedily eaten up by the on coming enemy. II. Those Reached by Intemperance. Strong drink causes men to err in their conduct, in their moral insight, in their judgments. It reaches the beautiful (v. 1) ; it reaches the learned (v. 7) ; It reaches those in authority; in fact all classes. It leads men to the depths of degradation and to (he loss of their wills (v. 8) ; it makes men to become beasts, wallowing in Iheir own vomit. Not only Samaria, but "these also" (vv. 7 and 8), that is people of Jeru salem have erred through wine and strong drink. Even the priests and the prophets had and do so now (See Ch! 56:10-12; Micah 2:11). The priests were especially inexcusable because of the plain directness of God's word (Lev. 10:9-10; Ezekiel 41:21). The result of their intemperance was that they utterly failed in their official acts. They reeled in vjsion and stum bled In judgment. The use of wine and strong drink made their social gatherings filthy and disgusting. Tem perance is the habit of abstaining from everything that destroys. It Is the con trol and right use of God's good gifts for service. Intemperance is lack of control or the wrong use of God's gifts in self-indulgence. III. The Lesson in Contrast. Jeru salem vs. Samaria. Samaria's crown of pride was not the glory of God. Its beauty was a fading flower (v. 4), his wisdom contemned through the ignorance of Samaria (vv. 6, 7, 12), his strength versus their weakness and wickedness (vv. C, 13). God teaches by contrast as well as by direct precept. Verses nine and ten-may be taken as a mocking answer of the peo ple to God's prophet. Isaiah intimates that the time to begin our instruction is in childhood (v. J)), that precept must be upon precept, and line upon line, here a little and there a little. There never is a time when we can let up in this struggle against the mighty evil of intemperance. Take as a reply (v. 9) this would seem to indicate that God took them to be babies just weaned. If the prophet, hlaaself, is the speaker, then Jehovah is represented as teaching knowledge to babes and not to the self-sufficient. It is these whom he "makes to under stand his message" (It. V. ), and the method of his teaching is precept upon precept. If we will not hear God's loving and patient call to repentance, he will speak to us through cruel ene mies. If we will not teach our chil dren, if we will not keep everlasting! agitating this question, he will use oth er means (v. 11). Even Dirt Is Cheap No Longer. The expression, "dirt cheap," must be discarded. Blame the war. Winni peg, Manitoba, florists have announced an Increase in the price of earth sold for potting flowers. A year ago earth sold for 50 cents a bushel. Now it costs 25 cents a pail. To Drive Out Malaria And Build Up The System Take the Old Standard GROVE'S TASTELESS chill TONIC. Not Her Drink. Little Isabel's mother had very Inju diciously allowed her to drink weak tea with her meals instead of milk. One day Isabel was taken out to lunch at a friend's house, and the friend, never dreaming that n child could drink anything other than milk, placed it before her In a broad, low, fancy cup. The child gazed at fhe milk in si lence for a while, and then astonished her hostess by remarking disdainfully, "I ain't a cat." Buffalo Express. YES! MAGICALLY! CORNS LIFT OUT WITH FINGERS You say to the drug store man, "Give me a small bottle of freezone." This will cost very little but will positively remove every hard or soft corn or callus from one's feet. A few drops of this new ether com pound applied directly upon a tender, aching corn relieves the soreness in stantly, and soon the entire corn or callus, root and all, dries up and can be lifted off with the fingers. This new way to rid one's feet of corns was introduced by n Cincinnati man, who says that freezone dries in a moment, and simply shrivels up the corn or callus without irritating the surrounding skin. If your druggist hasn't any freezone tell him to order a small bottle from his wholesale drug house for you. adv. His Job.
