On Thursday night of last week Mis Sue Sawyer gave a most enjoyable entertainment to a number of her most intimate friends, at her home at Roper. The house was most gorge ously decorated in the national colors, and every phase of the occasion seemed to be suggestive of the patriotism of the delight ful hostess, who had most ef fectively arranged the decora tions of each room. Several vocal and instrument al renditions of appropriate mu sic was rendered by the yourg ladies attending. One room was tastefully dee orated with evergreen and dimly lighted lights. ' This room was used for dancing. A delicious course of ice cream and cake was served. Those attending were Misses Jessie, Millie and Eula Spruill, Annie Leary, Lou Hart, Mary Hicks, Mary Joftnston, isa uay lord and Sue Sawyer. Messrs. R. P. DeRemer, J. B. School Plymouth High School closed with appropriate exerciser at the Majestic Theatre on Wednesday night of this week. A most eitective musical pro gram was arranged, and the lit erary features were splendid. Hon. H. S. Ward of Washing ton, delivered the closing address to a tremendous audience, ; Those receiving diplomas were Misses Lida B. Lewis, Pauline Lucas and Mr Grrinbery Tucker. Conditional diplomas were giyen to Miss Corrinne Smith and Messrs. iLloyd Gilbert and Owens Dupree. All Must Register Tuesday, June, 5th. The modern newspaper is more than a recorder of events. No man between the ages set forth by President Wilson has the privilege of non registration! Our readers should inform themselves concerning this important matter. Other interesting news will al so be found in this issue of the Beacon. Colored Farmer Takes Carbolic Acid. On Saturday afternoon last, T. Midgett, a colored farmer living near here went to Mack eys and entered the store of Mr. J. J. Bunch, where he purchased a bottle of carbolic acid. Shortly afterwards he went out in front of the store and quietly reposed on a seat, and in only a few minutes he passed into the Great Beyond. No one saw him drink the poison, but the natural inference is that he did. Several rumors have been circulated, but nothing that would give a reason for the sui cide came out at the trial before Recorder Swain on Monday. .The proprietor of the store was given a. hearing here Monday mornirfg.Dut owmfc; to an absence of incriminating evidence, the case was 'dismissed. ; .Froxa information created by the above hewing, a warrant was issued against Mr. Bunch lor semng ginger, this case was immediately tried, the de fendant found guilty and a fine of f 10.00 and the co3ts of the 1 ji) t court imposed upon him.
