SHEEP FARMING TO BE
ENCOURAGED.
Seemingly a lagging industry
in the State of North Carolina,
the production of sheep is sroing
to be pushed by the Animal In
dustry division of the North
Carolina Experiment Station.
For many years, Mr. R. S. Cur
tis has been interested in and
has ursred the production of
sheep in the State but has seen
the industry gradually decline on
account of lack of proper atten
tion, the gradual encroachment
of cultivated fields and the grow
ing menace of dogs; now, how
ever, an appropriation has been
given this work by the State De
partment of Agriculture and the
United States Department of
Agriculture and Mr. George
Evans former Superintendent of
the Animal Industry farm at
West Raleigh hs been selected
to carry on the work.
Mr. Evans is a native of Eng
land, coming fror.. the center of
the sheep producing section of
that Country. He has worked
with sheep all his life, coming to
this country over ten years ago
with a large importation of sheep
for Mr. Henry Wardell of New
York State. After remaining
with Mr. Wardell for three years,
he took ud work in Virginia and
showed sheep at the North Caro
lina State fair in 1911 wheie his
abiiitv in handling themlwas dis
covered by the officials in charge
of the A-n'mal Industry Division.
T.ie fo lowing Spring, he was
employed by this division to take
charge of the livestock feeding
work and was then later promot
ed to entire charge of the Animal
Industry Farm. Now he takes
the recently created position of
field man in sheep work. This
promotion comes in recognition
of his abiiitv in hand'ing all
phases of livestock work and
more especially that of sheep.
All kinds of sheep work will
be conducted. The farmers of
the State will be reached through
tie County Agents of the Agri
cultural Extension Service. Ex
perimental woik will be done as
heretofore on three of the Branch
Stations and in addition an ex
haustive study will be made in
the mountains on a 1350 acre
farm which has an ideal location
for a sheep experimental work.
Mr. Evans, as Sheep Field
Man, will devote his whole time
to the various phases of sheep
work. The most important of
these will be the selection of
pure bred rams for farmers,
pure bred and grade ewes for
breeding purposes, instructions
on the care, feeding, handling,
management and housing of
s'leep, the protection of sheep
from dogs and stomach worms,
and the formation of sheep,
lamb and wool associations.
Further information in regard
to this work is obtainable on ap
plication to Mr. R. S. Curtis,

Investigations, West Raleigh

Why the Family Favorite Coffee is the best cof
fee sold for the money you pay! Tin cans now
cost from 6 to 8c apiece, besides the expense of
the fancy label that gives the can such a beauti
ful send-off, which all must be figured in the quality of
the coffee they use. Thi Family Favorite Coffee com
es in a pjain paper bag which gives us the expense of
pntting in a can to add to the vuality of the coffee we use, and is parched
every week so as to hold its aroma and freshness. You know the differ
ence in the taste of a fresh biscuit from the taste of one which has been
baked a week. The same applies to coffee, for it will get stale and taste
flat, especially during the summer months. The grades of coffee we use
are sold in 173 coffee and tea stores that sell nothing else, and is used in
hotels, cafes and by thousands o' economical house-wives. We have
many pleased customers in Plymouth and Washington County, and we
are gaining new ones every day, for when once tried we have no trouble.
If you are out of town you can deal with us; we send parcel post prepaid
to any address within 300 miles in 5-lb lots of our 25, 30 and 35c grades of
