Y0 THE ROANOKE BEACON C.V.W.AUSBON Editor, and Publi.her. F. S. AUSBON PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. Plymouth, N. C, FriJay, Nov., 23rd, 1917. IS PLYMOUTH READY FOR A NEW SCHOOL BUILDING? Do we think more of our crim inals than we do of our children? Are we more solicitous about their health ? Should they have more comfortable Quarters ? If not, can the citizens of Plymouth stand still atiyllonger ? A $50,000.00 building is being erected with; all modern conve niences and provided wiih every necessary comfort for a jail and court house, f,'.wjji!e our children are crowded together in a school rriise that the town has long, very long bince out grown im properly lighted, poorly heated, and not ventilated at all, and smitary conditions unsatisfac tory, and with most meagre equipment. Can we expect to develop in our children the highest citizenship, Do we expect our children to start out in the world as schol ars? Are the highest ideals at tainable ? Can that God-given intellect be properly cultivated under such conditions ? It can not. One occasionally may excel in spite of these conditions, but never can tbey excel by reason of them, Nearly every village and ham let in this section has outstrip ped Plymouth in this particular Edenton, Hertford, Scotland Neck, Williamston, Belhaven; yes. even Creswell all have handsome, comfortable schoo buildings. What have we ? Let Plymouth wake up. She has good citizens ; clear think ing, clpable business men. Come to the Opera House next Wednesday evening at 8:30 and let's discuss this question. Let mothers, farmers, merchant?, preachers, lawyers, doctors, mill men, all come. Let everybody come. Hon. Van B. Martin and others will speak Come, come all !
